Blog post
Done with college onto the real world.
Ok so my other post got a huge ton of critcism, all in one reply I might add, that I was not looking for so basically I am reposting that yay I am graduating and will leave it at that. Aparently everything on the web must be done a certian way or no one cares so I will just keep my digital portfolio to myself and whoever I apply to for a job. To be frank there where quite a few points made that really hurt about some of my artwork that I have worked VERY hard on for the past four years (particually the half-assed lighting one). The page was not to "sell myself" but rather a digital version of my flatbook with layout pages for each model, level, concept, etc. Sorry to be such a downer but that post while it was meant to be helpful I'm sure, just ended up being hurtful. I will just keep my work to myself untill I can create OMG WOW how did you do that? type artwork because aparently student work just isn't good enough.

Forwarning I will delete this blog post too if it turns into a huge discussion. Just let it stay at me being happy for my graduation which I actually was earlier today.

I'm sorry to hear people posted stupid things like that. I glanced at your earlier .plan (I refuse to call them blogs :) and saw the portfolio image you linked. It looked professional and I didn't get a chance to view your whole portfolio earlier (I had intended to come back and view it) so if you'd like, e-mail a link and I'll take a look. I am shopping around for artists in the near future.

At any rate, be happy about graduation.

Hey Arland/Barry, Congrats on making it through 4 years. Some of the best artist I have encountered in this industry in the past 8 years have come from Savannah College of Art. Good school. I missed your last post so I don't know the whole story nor will I make assumptions. The one thing you will learn, especially if you pursue games as an artistic career, is everyone in the company is gonna have an opinion about your art. So thats 1st big hurdle. The next is you have to suffer the slings and arrows of the internet. It requires some tough skin as an artist. I would love to take a look at your stuff and maybe pass on some constructive criticism. Drop me a line at JJBeers@mail.com
And don't let the opinions of people push you around. You have a great community here. I for one would be happy to cheer you on as you grow as an artist. Progress not perfection. MAKE YOUR GAME!

Sorry.

Edit: Really, I am sorry. I didn't mean to just cut you down. I was trying to help. As Jude says, an artist has to have tough skin.

Hehe, Jeff, you've been too rude it seems.

Barry, I carefully watched your portfolio, I think I've looked at all the pictures. It is true it's not the quality you'd search in a game yet, but this is a good beginning.
You MUST be able to accept the most harsh criticism (except the "1t suCks!!11!" kind) or you wont progress.
The worst thing people could tell you is: "you rocks, woo, that's just great, don't change anything" because when you'll search some work, you'll get rejected instantly and you'll wonder why.

Imo, Jeff is someone with talent and valuable opinion (when not too direct ^^ ).

My opinion is: take care of proportions and anatomy, don't make a website too fat. Look at Piet Mondrian work about square and line. It's lighter even using the same tools as you (nice color work).
And try to show bigger picture too.
After it's practice, practice, practice :) In 4 years, you must be able to show more :)

And more important, congrats on your degree ^^

Ok i'm sorry for my "soft skin" you just have to realize that what I posted was the culmination of 4 years of work. Each of which has been ripped apart in critisim many times until I have gotten it to the point it is at. I was really only posting my .plan about graduation and decidied to throw in the website as an afterthought. The whole thing has been designed to be talored to a specific company which I am applying to which would explain some of the differences in what one would expect from a portfoilo website. But most importantly the larger images are intened to be copies of my flatbook pages and hence do not quite have to internet form most would be used to. Critism is one thing and I am very used to it but to have the last 4 years of my life systematically critisized in almost every aspect right after posting it rather hurt.

@Jeff: Don't worry too much about it I just wasn't prepared to have my work critiqued to that level. Particularly becuase it has been critiqued along the way so much already. I was going to actually post a reply to each point you made before explaining some choices and whatnot but, after writing responses to the first few I guess I just gave to much into my emotions. I realize you were trying to help I feel you may have just been a little overly blunt. But, I did not want to bring you out to be some bad person and is why I did not name names because you really were trying to help.

@Ben: Anatomy is something I do stuggle with and if I had images of my earlier work it would be obvious how far it has come but, I am prepared to keep working on it in the future. As for Mondrian I am familar with his work but didn't even think about it in the desgin. Pesonally what you see as "fat" I see as bold and was a specific desgin choice.

I guess all in all I should be ready for critism reguardless of asking for it. My .plan should have stayed up and I should not have posted this one. I guess I shouldn't post material in the middle of an emotional time such a graduation because the emotions just seem to take over and they are talking not me as myself.

I am reposting the website for those who are interested however let me state that I do not want critique on it. I am posting it solely for those who are interested in what I have done over the years.

Edit: Let me add that this has been a great community since I joined starting my senior project and is one of the reasons I stuck with Torque even though all the problems I had. I do not take the events that have happened as representative of the community.
