As you all know, there's this cool new site in Beta called Great Games Experiment (GreatGamesExperiment.com) which I'm sure you've all joined, created profiles on, and submitted tons of games to. If you haven't, what are you waiting for? The world's greatest resource for finding and promoting games (indie or otherwise!) is now in Beta for GarageGames community members. It's a great opportunity to promote your game early, or check out unusual games not to be found on YetAnotherFlashGameSite(TM).

Today I put on my explorer hat and share 10 random great games.
These are ALL available to PLAY NOW FOR FREE at GGE!
In no particular order, here we go:

---

Doukutsu Monogatari, or Cave Story if you prefer, is a unique little side-scroller that refuses to be put in the straight platformer genre. It captures the feeling of exploration provided by games such as Metriod and marries them to a simple jump-and-attack interface. You'll need to download the English patch, and be sure to run the setup file before the game to get your controls working, but the extra hoops are worth the extra steps. This game has a character that is all its own!

---

Cortex Command is like a side-scrolling FPS with some extras thrown in. The tiny graphics make for pixel-perfect visuals that flourish with life. The controls are a bit touchy for a keyboard, but if you have a gamepad you should be right at home. Jetpack your character around, find your opponents, then fill them with lead! Terrain deformations add a visual punch as well as a unique gameplay mechanic. Though an early build, is shaping up into some great fun.

---

Falling sand! This game is so much fun. Actually, it's not a game at all, but a "sandbox" where you play with sand. Draw lines to create channels, change the rate and speed, change physical properties, and more. Though given limited tools to play with, you can create and use them in unlimited ways to stretch your imagination. Tons of fun!

---

SimWork is a 3D work mini-game where you explore the cubicle of a cube-dweller in order to figure out the 10 tasks that must be completed by the day's end. Very fun (and funny) mini-game, and always astounding to see 3D in a browser.

---

Fire and Healing is an original TGB demo entirely by Matt Langley. Grab a friend for a little mini-LAN party action (it's PVP, no AI) although even solo play can be fun. The premise is simple -- you're fire (or healing) and you burn (or heal) the forests. Burn, baby, burn! A surprisingly fun game for what is currently an unfinished demo (great job Matt!).

---

Games don't come more simple than this! Like Falling Sand, Line Rider is more a sandbox to play in than a game. Draw a line (or several), then hit play and watch the little dude (or dude-ette) ride down the line you drew and either own it or eat it. Try to create cool jumps for your guy to successfully land, or sweet ways to make him fly off and shred face. Tiny download, tons of fun.

---

Harmonic Convergence is a Lumines clone. It's not finished, but through the wonder that is GGE, it's downloadable and playable! A bunch of the game modes don't work yet, and no instructions are offered (tip: use arrow keys and z/x), but spin and match the falling blocks into groups to score. When complete, this should be a compelling experience, but for now, check out the nugget that is the core gameplay -- it's there, and it's fun!

---

Holy freak, does this game rock! Ok yeah it's Pong, but it's not just Pong On Graphics, or Pong On HyperGraphics -- the fluid dynamic that you see on screen (represented by the trippy colors) is affected by heat that your paddle shoots out, adding not just a new graphical dimension but a new gameplay dimension to this ultra-classic, yet without all the too-expected multi-ball etc powerups. A true original -- and just check out that procedural bling! Oh, my. The sandbox mode kicks ass too; there's an entire gallery of Plasma-Pong-made sandbox art on the website! GGE it for details.

---

Where did this game come from? Certainly not from the blast'em'n'kill'em library of games I'm used to trolling. It's games like this that will make GGE rock your socks off -- I would have never found this strange and alluring game without! It's a side and up action game, but again, don't mistake it for a simple platformer as it's anything but. Each new screen yields new surprises and delights, and exploring the world for the first time evokes that first time you played Pitfall and never knew just what was around the corner. Cute and different and best of all, free - not one to miss!

---

What's this? A 3D Scorched Earth clone with FPS-like aiming and a rockin' fun turtlicious theme? And it's free? Surely the GGE gods have smiled upon me today, for it is a gem that they gift me with, a gem! OK, so I made this game, but this list wouldn't be complete without it. It's free, it's on GGE, it's a good way to perfect those projectile gravity tossin skillz you've been cultivating for so long. Download it, play it, rate it!

---

After its first week in Beta, GGE has gotten a ton of new content. Let's get a ton more! Post your favorite games -- indie or big publisher -- and start those fan pages going. Put up your unfinished demo, experimental games, or game in a days (come on, you know you have a ton) -- you never know what new fans you'll have.

Think of it another way - we all know of 1 or 2 cool games that nobody else knows of or has heard of. So if all howevermanythousand of us each submit those few games, think about how many cool games we'll have to play on GGE!

Well that's it peeps. Check out these 10 games, then check out some more. You never know what finds on GGE you'll score that'll have you saying "How come I never heard of THIS sweet game before?!"

Awesome post Josh!! As a gamer and game developer, I could not be more excited about GGE. Everybody at GarageGames should be taking a look at and participating heavily in GGE. We need to have a non-evil company establish something like this. If we don't then Rupert Murdoch will do it for us, and you can kiss freedom goodbye.

Everybody in this community should commit to completely filling out a GGE developer profile, making friends, joining and participating in Groups, and adding at least two games with nicely filled out profiles.

Plasma Pong is an amazing idea, a fantastic graphical update to an old classic.

Line Rider is a cool concept ive always wanted to create, have the player draw the world whilst an ai controlled person moves along the screen, so drawing hills to avoid obstacles, bridges to cross water e.t.c

Yeah, this is definitely the coolest thing since sliced bread and will surely be the gamers MySpace I sorta called for last year in my Dec 22nd blog! I'm truly happy about this development and I just hope it takes off the right way for developers. If it's set up right then it'll have that viral effect where people find games off other users profiles etc...

Awesome post! I'll be checking out a few of those games...

Rupert Murdoch? Is he like the head of EA or something? That would be a terrible thing for sure. This looks like a good thing though.

Phil Carlisle   (Nov 28, 2006 at 09:45 GMT)
You dont know who Rupert Murdoch is?? You probably live in outer mongolia or something :)

Seriously though, GGe is definitely showing promise.. cant wait to get back online and fill out my games shots and profiles a bit.

I thought that Ted Turner was a bigger threat to freedom than Rupert Murdoch ...

YESSS Line Rider, thats one of mine! xD

Cortex Command rocks hard, and it definitely doesn't hurt that one of my early art inspirations is doing the art for it. :D Line Rider is stupidly fun, enough so that I remember blowing my entire lunch hour putzing around with it. :D

Gary Preston   (Nov 28, 2006 at 17:29 GMT)
Line rider was pretty good fun :) Sim Work looks like it could be amusing and worth a download later.

I think GGE could do with a Random section though, hunting through the various categories will turn up games and obviously the most popular/viewed/rated ones will be seen, but, there may be a number of good games listed yet not really known about. Having 5 random(ish) games appear in the list per day might give a few of those games a bit of time in the spotlight, enough to garner a few reviews/comments perhaps.

Awesome post Josh! There are so many great games on GGE thus far and you've done a great job of scratching the surface and showing us a few.

Cave Story is the best freeware game ever. Nice to have a reliable locale for the English version of it now.
