RTS Starter Kit coming soon!
A lot of you have been asking? "When is RTS coming?" "Will I ever get to play with this?" Well we here, at GarageGames, have always known that answer is a definite, 'maybe soon'. Soon is next week.
Right now the doccumentation is all that is left to finish off. The associates, mainly Tom, have been beating on this and we think there are no more crash bugs. Tom did a little water-craft based RTS and found some of the limitations of the pack. (I like to refer to that as, "Things to do for version 2.0") Right now, using the RTS Starter Kit, you will be able to very rapidly prototype a standard RTS. I really feel like I need to do a little expectation management, but I also don't want to undersell the amazing leg-up this pack will give you. This will not make your RTS for you. This will not make you not need to do any programming to make the next Warcraft 3.

What does it do? It will give you a huge head-start into making an RTS game in Torque. It has a minimap which will let you click on the map to re-center the camera, show you your camera field of vision. It has a great script interface to let you add pulsing-markers to the map to alert the player or team-mates. It tracks unit-groups, (CTRL+1, etc) lets you add units to groups, selection code, selection circles, drag-selection, giving orders to units, unit-fighting, damage, a modified projectile class that is more network-friendly, network friendly optimization for unit movement. Buildings, a game lobby, some very basic test-art, a camera which can pan around, zoom, change pitch.
So there you have it. Barring anything (like the dev team getting arrested for protesting tomorow if Bush steals this election too) drastic, you'll see this pack available early next week.

Speaking as Republican Pat's political opinion isn't representative of GarageGames, just ask Benjamin B.
I also find it funny you are worried about political opinions when your dressed as Nazi in your dev picture. Heheh. Breathe :-)

That is if i wanted a "commander role" over looking the battlefield using the rts pack, online e.t.c will still work as normal ?
or does it have its own special network layouts e.t.c ?
In other words is it easy to have an fps/rts mix or is it mainly geared towards solely an rts ?

The RTS pack is built on 1.3. It will not be available for older versions of Torque. It will be kept up to date with future versions (like 1.4 and on).

Yah, I'm just one guy, etc., etc. but I'm just being honest with you. And after having spent $100+ on your stuff, I could be a loyal customer... or not.

RTS kit looks good though - I'm not planning on doing one,
but a lot of the mentioned features could be useful for other things too.

Ian, this isn't a good pack for Illumina, the AI pack is what we need.
Down with Bush!!

In my opinion, I don't think it is correct to express ones political opinions when its under the GarageGames .plans or when they are advertising a "company product". Under those two situtations, they are a Garagegames representative.
Eric.. bashing someones intelligence or wits because someone will/want/would switch to a different engine is uncalled for--regardless of their reasons. You basically implied that if he acts on his opinion that he's unable to produce an independent game yet you state that someone else has their right to voice their opinion.
Now can we cut this crap out and talk about the RTS?
Keep up the good work GarageGames.. with all the good stuff coming out , I'm really pleased at having selected TGE.

If you believe that the political affiliation of people should impact whether or not you buy their products, that is your right to excercise your free speech, but I recommend that you be aware that there are probably bound to be progressives in just about every technology company you buy from. If Pat wants to make mention of his political beliefs, then that is his right of free speech as well. No one has revoked that constitutional amendment yet.
Brett Fattori (Nov 03, 2004 at 17:28 GMT)
You have to know that what you're saying is complete garbage. You're making an assumption that is a sweeping stereotype, and that's not fair. Being a Bush supporter myself, I've never told anyone not to talk about their political viewpoints -- in fact, I encourage it. Talk with Mark Frohnmayer... He and I had a healthy discussion at IGC. So, to try to file everyone into a bucket as "Bush Supporters" and say things like the end of "Democracy, free speech, and the [separation] of church and state" is hogwash... There hasn't been a single thing to indicate that one way or another.
And for the record... there is/was no theft of the election in 2004. Nearly 4,000,000 popular votes difference does not a steal make. :-)
All,
The RTS pack looks very cool... I'd suggest voting for it with your $$$. Then, new improvements will show up and we'll start seeing even more gametypes show up from GG.

Ah, and since this is multiplayer, We can assume different players can control their own groups?
Nauris Krauze (Nov 03, 2004 at 20:26 GMT)
Josh Williams (Nov 03, 2004 at 20:28 GMT)
Yes, different players can control their own groups in a multiplayer game. :)
And also yes, there's no AI. We thought about doing a generalized RTS AI framework, but it would've been a lot of work (consequently raising the price of the pack), and there wasn't a really nice way to do it in the first place. Since you can do so many different kinds of games with this pack, it'd be extremely difficult to get an AI set-up that'd work well across all game types. AI techniques that make sense for Warcraft 3-style games won't be as effective in squad-based games, let along more unique game styles. We didn't want to limit anyone by imposing a particular AI design.
That said, it'll be fun to see different AI techniques used with the pack by various teams, and we may end up incorporating some AI into the pack in a future update.

I just converted everything over to 1.3, so I am ready. I have been waiting expectantly for this kit. I am so psyched (sp).
Did I mention this is cool?
GG Rocks!

In any event I was surprised when I woke up and found out who was president:

At least we don't have to worry about that Decepticon threat anymore.

Quick question on the RTS pack (and other packs as well I guess)--do the license agreements work the same as underlying TGE (one license per team member with access to the code), or do you do packs more on a "per project" basis?
I.E. I have 3 developers on my team with access to our SVN repository. The pack will be integrated to our repository. Do we need 3 licenses?

@Pat and Collector, etc: settle down already, the election is over. The next four years will show whether or not the choice was a good one.
Josh Moore (Nov 04, 2004 at 18:40 GMT)
This pack looks pretty sweet. I'd like to combine it with a regular RPG and have you wage small scale wars once you become powerful enough.
Stephen Zepp (Nov 04, 2004 at 20:56 GMT)
That's exactly what our project has planned. Add in an FPS mode where you can play various levels of unique monsters (and gain in power along a separate advancement tree), and you're pretty close to what we are shooting for!
@GG:
Any word on the licensing plan you are looking at, or is it up in the air for the type of scenario I am looking at?
Josh Moore (Nov 04, 2004 at 21:22 GMT)
Stephen Zepp (Nov 04, 2004 at 21:57 GMT)
Add on to that those players that like the strict "kill anything that moves" FPS style play who provide conflict for the RPG and RTS genre players, and that's pretty much what we are shooting for!
