Golfing blues, Elven excitement, and a geek congregation...
Just looking at my past plan to see where I left off, I realised that it ended with "Merry Christmas!". My gawd, time sure does fly!
Well, I suppose quite a bit has happened since then. Our mobile phone golf game got completed... three times over. A nightmare scenario where the client doesn't quite have a clue, and we fail quite badly in managing them properly. In the end, the 2 month project got redone from scratch in 3 weeks. Not quite a piece of work that I'm particularly proud of.
Well, thanks to that, our Elven Legends project got pushed back 2 weeks. Elven Legends is a multiplayer mobile phone game for 3G phones. Right now, it looks like a sort of 3rd-person Quake, but it can be expanded later on to take on more RPGish elements. Players can play over Bluetooth, SIP and through a central matchmaking server. We'll be showcasing it at a Nokia conference in Hong Kong at the end of the month.
The interesting part is that we developed the 2D/network engine from scratch. The material in Josh's and Melv's T2D plans proved quite inspirational (and helped me appear smarter and more insightful in front of colleagues!). While our engine isn't really anything like T2D, being a lot smaller scale and game/platform specific, the guiding principles and philosophies were invaluable. Maybe one day we'll see T2D on Symbian eh?
One other thing that has been taking some of my time is the local IGDA chapter. We're only just starting to get things reorganised, beginning with the first meeting in a long time on 9th May. If anybody happens to be in Singapore, check out the details at the Singapore Chapter Wiki.
Sadly, I haven't had much time or spare brain juice for anything Torquey lately, even after buying T2D. Kind of ironic, being too busy making games to make games. But I have nevertheless managed to squeeze a bit of time to learn a bit about the art side of things, all the way from traditional pencil and paper drawing to using graphic tablets. It will be a long while yet before I paint any Mona Lisa's though. ;)
