Please don't spam the blogs.

Oh I'm sorry.. I thought these were meant to be used for blogging one's game design progress. My mistake

Chris \"C2\" Byars   (Jan 02, 2007 at 15:06 GMT)
I don't see the problem here, Jeff..

I thought the post was funny. How about rewriting the text as:

As I was working the other day (as many of the other blogs begin), I decided to test out my new art design to really stick it to my protagonist, Johnny (a working name that will probably be morphed into something unintelligible, to follow the normal fantasy style; although Johnny may be a good name in the end).

"Johnny" AKA "Malphoratagonad the Short", meet Grimaldy AKA "Dookienoggin the large":

First, I can think of a few other people who 'spam' more and with a lot more vulgar language. Secondly, I dont see another blog from this person so where is the spam in this post. Like othes mentioned, it could use some more info though.

Jeff Tunnell   (Jan 02, 2007 at 22:07 GMT)
Spamming is putting up a bunch of blogs in a day, or more like a couple of hours in this case. There is nothing wrong with the content, but if one person puts up a bunch of blogs in one day, it moves others off the front page, and they don't get read.

Either way, I won't post my blogs here anymore. I don't wish to be banned.

Scott Coursey   (Jan 03, 2007 at 02:47 GMT)
Now, now... Let's not be rash here. I seriously doubt you're in jeopardy of getting banned. Just don't say, "Hey, I changed a single line of code today! Check it out!" Something a little more substantial would be better.

Personally, I'd like to see what Grimaldy looks like. Also, Johnny's face. I like the character so far.

Jeff Tunnell   (Jan 03, 2007 at 03:57 GMT)
There is no danger of being banned. I explained that the content was OK. The frequency was not.

Scott Coursey   (Jan 03, 2007 at 05:35 GMT)
Frequency? From what I see, this is his first blog entry.

Oh, well.

Scott,

If I recall correctly, there were two postings within the same 24 hour period. The first was an in-modeler screenshot of a cartoon-style dragon creature with a bit of accompanying text. The character certainly looked promising, but there wasn't much meat to the blog. That post isn't listed anywhere now, though. It appears to have been removed.

Maybe it's just me, but the word 'blog' tends to suggest loose stream-of-consciousness thought dumps and random ramblings. Those kinds of posts seem right at home on personal pages and social sites -- less so on primarily developer websites, though.

When I see a developer update in the blogs section, I'm hoping to read about how someone's project is developing or some big news in their career. I see their posts as opportunities for me to learn something about game development from people who are in the trenches and are willing to share their stories. And if those posts are accompanied by screenshots, concept art, videos or implementation diagrams (JRitter:)), that's just icing on the cake for me.

Getting back to Andrew's project -- it looks pretty cool and I would like to see how it progresses. Hopefully he will continue to keep us informed.

However, when a GG official tells you to knock it off, you knock it off!

I had the wrong impression. I thought this was a blog, for sharing game development progress with other indie game designers in an informal way (or, in this case triumphs after many hours of work.) It says "resource" not blog, but I saw them listed as "blogs." It's obviously got very different rules than other blogs I'm familiar with, and is far more formal. I don't wish to be kicked off the GG site, I need it too much, so I'll not post any screenshots here again. I've been warned once. You usually only get two, so I can ill afford another mistake (especially without any info about what you can or cannot post.)

I'll just post to my own private blog, which anybody interested can contact me to find the URL for. Safer that way. There I can post screenshots and little triumphs (and they are little) without fear of banning or being told off, but I warn ya now (if you're interested) it won't be anything formal or world-shattering. I post there whenever I have something neat to show, that's all. It won't be Official Release notices, or anything like that, which is I guess what GG "blogs" are for.

I really only posted it for a couple of other indie game-designers buddies within GG who are interested in how my game is going, so I'll just link them (you) to the private (safe) blog directly. That way I won't anger the powers that be or break any unspoken rules. The images are all hosted on that site anyway :)

I had never blogged to GG before, so it was a sort of experiment to see if I would get favorable feedback that might encourage me to keep working. I'm always seeking ways to keep my motivation up.

Could I suggest that these rules about what the blogs can contain, when you can post, etc.etc. that they be added to the "Add New Blog" page? There's a guideline there but it mentions nothing about not posting on a Sunday following a Saturday, or any other hidden rules there might be. That way people who come after me will have at least a chance not to make such mistakes and won't get this sort of result.

@Scott: I dunno, Scott, maybe you can code and add a magic door that walks through walls, debug it and add the AI for an NPC all in one line of code, but I sure can't. I posted this after working all Sunday on it, but I'm not very clever. If there's an intelligence limit for blogs, then that should be in the guidelines too "Don't post unless you're a torque expert"
