Blog post
Ola people.
Just a quick entry to tell everybody what I've been doing.

I have to admit that I have not been working on my game for 2 months. Not that I have lost interest or anything. I was in Europe & Dubai for 2 months. Just taking some time off; getting away from reality.

So what happened since the last update? Well, not as much as I hoped for, but it wasn't standing still either. I managed to get the teams (Alien/Human) and team specific ships in. This wasn't too hard either.
One problem I have is that my GUI's are slow... my mouse lags alot. But I'll look at that later.

I was able to get some extra cash. I sold my bike. The falling is becoming irretating, and I don't like scars which I have plenty of now. So no more of that. Anyway... With the money I decided to buy the Lightning pack, models, and get myself online at home.

Models
I bought the models from 3drt, and I have to admit that I'm very impressed with them. Included with the models are the bump and specular maps, so i'll have to give bumpmapping a shot soon. The one problem I have with the pack is that too little of the space ships look like human fighters. Tell me what you guys think should be human:

Lightning Pack
Wow!!! I don't know how to express myself. This pack is a must have for anyone who is series about Torque. It didn't take me 30min to get it integrated into my project. And things that I thought was broken actually works now. Integration was really easy. I was actually affraid of it gonna be a hard/tedious task. I can honestly tell you, that it was a breeze. If you've seen my previous blog, you'll notice the difference in the screenshots. I'm really glad i invested in it. And I'm not even using half the stuph in there.

What's next?
Well, there's still lots of work. I'm thinking of just getting basic AI in, that attacks an enemy. Shouldn't be too hard. Then at least I can get shot too. There are lots of things that still need to change. I need to redo all my planets, as I thought I'll save some Polys by cutting them half. But you are able to see the cut off areas. Then I need props to float around in space.

Ordered the next 3D Game programming book. So getting that next week, so I can jump on the AI. Even typing this makes me realize how much I have to do.

Anyway. Hope I didn't bore you too much. If i did, have a cookie... or a screenshot or 3.

Everything looks better with the Lighning pack (even in space):

The laser lights up the asteroid as it passes:

This image you can see everything lighting up because of the explosion:

Next time I'll show you guys more ships. I'm still rigging them. Any comments welcome as always.

Hey hey, looking good. :) Like I said in one of your posts; I really like the idea of a top-down 2D style game in Torque, especially a space game - keep up the great work.

Your screenshots look a lot better! Great job and I can't wait to see the final product. :)

Good luck

Very very very good stuff here Burning. I have some questions to ask you but its going to be about a year or two before I even get the point where I need this info. By any chance are you documenting the steps you are taking to get it this far other than just the .plans? I want to make an MMO based off the look of your game currently main just the top down veiw from the 3d engine. To bad I couldnt have a team of like 10 people so I could get all the projects in my head running at one time. That would be awesome.

Looks great - big improvement with the Lighting pack - I might just have to buy that too. I also checked out your spaceship pack. Very nice indeed. Lots of good work there.

I got some models from them(3drt.com) too, use their textures on my other models. You said
"my GUI's are slow... my mouse lags alot", my guess the problem is not the gui, i think you have
too many objects(rocks?) in there, so the whole client becomes slow. If that is the case, you can turn the
sky's visibleDistance to some smaller number, that may help, and the game looks good.

@All: Fanx

@Donald: Not reallly documenting it all, all I have is a text document, where everything I want to do is in a list at the bottom, and as I do them i move them upwards and slapping a date to the completed task.
Trying to get it feature complete, and then add the goodies, but as you probably know, that's not always as much fun, as the game tends to look the same over a month and that doesn't always feel like progress.

I know what you mean wishing you had a team of 10.

@Kevan: Thanx dude, I'll have a look at what your suggesting.

Managed to get one of those ships in last night. I know the screenshot is not the view a person will play with, but hey, it's the idea of getting them in the game:

Great Screen shots....So how did you like (or not) Dubai?

James Laker (BurNinG)   (Aug 01, 2006 at 11:21 GMT)
Dubai was great. I can't believe how organised everything was. Being from South Africa, I'm not used to pretty building and/or good service. I really enjoyed it, and will one day go again. The traveling bug got me, so I'm going to different places once a year (min) now.
