Boy am I happy with this one! If one single image captured the look and feel of my game BRAVE it would be this one.
It's Mike Trim's artwork for the series UFO. This is what I want, this is what the game will look like - time to learn those shaders!!!

it looks like cover of an atari 2600 game...

very dramatic!!

that retro feeling makes it look very cool

cheers

Yeah you're right - I never thought of that. I want it to have the feeling of the original Star Wars poster - dashing swashbuckling space-faring action using a look of, "what would high tech space ships look like, if NASA of today built them"

You succeeded in that, big time. That Star Wars poster is the first thing that popped into my mind, even before reading any text.

Check out an old TV Series called "Moonbase Alpha" for more of the same. They had some cool nasa style stuff.

I love the old style film/game cover art, most recent ones I checked out in memory lane were double dragon, another world, shinobi, man the list goes on...

It would be seriously cool if you can achieve that look in your game! Is the image itself yours to use for your game or is it sampled from some other work (Sorry, I'm a little confused :0))

He, I'm allmost certain that Andy aint going to use it in his game as its not quite his 'sample ;)

Thanks for pointing that out Christian - geeze!!! I already said it was Mike Trim's work for UFO... read people!!! Read !!!

Heh heh - just messing around.

But seriously, what I'm doing right now is scouring the net for images that define the look and feel, or the art style for my game. So all the images I use are for reference only. When it comes to it, I will be doing my own art for the models, splash screens and textures.

I have grabbed models from 3dcafe and turbo squid that are free anyway, as placeholder objects so I can code around them. In about October I am going to start replacing all those assets with my own (contributors welcome) to make it all my own IP.

By the way, I think the 'Moonbase Alpha' series mentioned is actually Space 1999, a series about when the moon got ripped away from Earth's orbit. Mike Trim also designed the art style for that series.

Here's a link to both UFO...

... and Space 1999...

How cool do they look? I'm not trying to rip people off. However what does piss me off is when I google images of this stuff, occassionally I get blocked with a message like "image piracy is a crime" - geeze, I'm not copying the images... I'm just using them as reference. People would know if you ripped an image for a game.

Thanks for the clarification. I actually did read and saw the part you are referring to, but I guess I kinda glazed over the 'for the series UFO.' which probably makes it pretty clear, I thought perhaps the dude was a concept artist with a gg account or something :D

Anyhow, sorry for the moment of slowness :S, there are some good concept artist/artists on gg floating around though, perhaps they would relish this as challenge as it's not a style I've seen anyone do, attempt or pull off yet...

Andy Hawkins   (Jun 09, 2007 at 13:16 GMT)
I would love for someone to come forward and offer their services as concept artists and texturer for this. I think I could achieve it myself, being an amateur artist but I have to learn the style first, and there might be someone out there, that could do this well.

So the offer's there. If you want to contribute - contact me :)
