Creating that all important web presence
Well today I decided to move my web presence over to a new provider. Who would have thought that getting a domain name transferred was so much hard work!

I've reached that stage in my project, where I need to start getting the marketting up and out there. This isn't any good if I don't have a web presence. I can't stress enough to everyone just how important this has become over the years or just how many developers here still don't have a web presence.

I haven't gone for the web site with the same name as the game gimmick, as I want to promote my company as much as the games it makes. I want the name to have the style of presence of a film studio rather than a games studio. A lot of this stems from my game design technique. When I create levels, I think more from a film point of view and set a scene. This scene has set action points and hopefully dictates the flow of the action in a dramatic and exciting way.

I should also be able to get any news and screenshots out there without relying on wether or not my .plan will make it onto the GG community site. For some reason my zombie game announcement a few weeks ago didn't get on, even though someone thanking someone else for something (they didn't mention what that something was even) did make it?

I guess the good thing about that is I am forced to no longer rely on announcing stuff through a .plan here with no guarantee that it even get's posted up.

plans are not moderated (unless it's spam/inappropriate/etc). they are posted immediately upon submission. however, there is a persistent and nasty bug that wipes your plan when you submit it, which is probably what you experienced.

so what is your website, and what is it you're marketing?

I looked at his web site, but it seems to be having issues. He must be hosting somewhere in Germany! http://www.simpleobjectives.com

@Joshua

Didn't know about the plan monster :o) so have to say a sorry to the GG guys for implying the plan was deliberately not posted "Sorry guys I should have known better!"

As for my web site. I am creating two games and it is the first of these that is nearing completion. Sadly my domain name is still in limbo somewhere so even I can't get to my site yet except on my local machine through dreamweaver :oP. The first game is called "The adventurer's Boast" and is a competitive game for up to four players. You compete to finish quests first, while hindering your opponents in any way you can. It's kind of like a medieval mario party!

The second is a zombie killing fest featuring two characters (for that co-op play element) called Crotchetti and Tubbs. They dress similarly to two certain 80's detectives too...and one favours the sawn off as his weapon of choice. It's more a humor thing as I like fun multiplayer games a lot.

I hope to have the site up and running soon and then you can see some screenshots to get a better idea. The Zombie game is still about 6months away though so it's just concept stuff at present, while the Adventurer's Boast is about three months away with the gloss being added and gameplay tweaking about to commence.

I'm very excited about these two games :o)

Edit: For anyone who is interested. I am using a package called Mambo for the web site (not that you can get to it yet). This package is kind of like the PHPNuke stuff but, much easier to use. If anyone is looking for a web site package and has a provider that gives a mysql database and php in their packages, then this may be for you.

As always a caveat. You will get out of Mambo only what you put into it i.e. it will create generic layouts for you only. Templates are available so look around and change the standard banners for your own logo, header etc.

Reminds me a lot of how Star Wars: Knights of the Old Replublic flowed. Gives you the feeling of being in an exciting movie (the camera was very dynamic in the in game cut scenes too). The game got numerous game of the year awards so I guess others liked the style too :)

I use Mambo myself for the ease of editing through the browser to control content. Good luck with the site.

@Matthew

Thanks :o) I tend to try to get people to design levels and game elements from a film shoot perspective. I tend to find that the results are much more interesting to the player and helps to get them involved in the game story more quickly.

For instance here is a snippet from the opening scene of the adventurer's boast

Camera pans to an old inn. Focus on in sign. Sign reads "The goblet and gullet". Sound of merriment from inside. Door opens and we weave through the crowd to a corner table with four adventurer's drinking. A board with papers pinned to it and a wooden header reading quest board can be seen behind them and just out of focus.

Camera close up on first adventurer.

Old bearded knight : What's that you say [short pause] Well speak up man!

Focus shifts to wizards face. Pipe smoke curls up through shot.

Pipe smoking Wizard : I said I could finish any five quests you care to name faster than the lot of you!

cut back to knights face

Old bearded knight : Any five you say [smiles wickedly] your on me old bean

cut to previously quiet warrior

Burly warrior : I'll second that challenge! [laughs] A weakling wizard and an old armoured codger don't stand a chance against my might!

move to silent female who was previously just out of shot

Female archer : You men just don't have the flare to beat me at such a challenge [wry smile] I'm in too!

cut back to bearded knight

Old bearded knight :[turns to face off screen] Squire saddle me horse [starts to rise from table] Oh and grab that quest board there's a good chap!

{Titles and start options displayed}

There is a bit more detail than that in the design document appendix. It's mainly scene setting and descriptions to help the artist better draw the story boards (all done now :o) ). It was amazing how much time having these scripts and descriptions saved. The artist got it right first time in almost all cases! Having a tight art brief and clear location requirements really helps.
