A newbie's random thoughts on MMORPGs...
I've recently been on an MMORPG spritz, playing mostly Ragnarok Online and Guild Wars, but at the same time, 'analyzing' the world of MMORPGs and what makes them fun...and I know this might be common sense...but I think i'll just put it down on paper anyways
The fun of playing an MMORPG really depends on the player itself. I usually 2 types of people: the people who have fun when playing with friends (the MMO aspect), and the people who have fun playing it as just another game (the RPG aspect). Personally, I think I usually play with more emphasis on the RPG aspect. We'll just call these two guys Bob (for the MMO aspect) and Jack (for the RPG aspect).
Whenever Bob chooses an MMORPG to play, he usually tries to find one that's somewhat popular (so that there'll be more players), cheap (if he doesn't like his fellow players, at least he wouldn't have wasted too much money), and involves a lot of clan/guild activity (such as castle raids, if you are familar with them). Bob doesn't really care about graphics too much. However, Bob wants a game where he will easily be able to find allies to play and level up with, as well as enemies to show off his skills against. For Bob, the game speed (how fast one levels up) doesn't really matter too much - even if it's slow, he still has friends to level up with.
Jack, on the other hand, plays RPGs as they are - even if his friends play the same game, he probably would not bother PMing them unless he needed desperate help. Jack will play only games that give you a plethora of paths/classes that you can choose, as well as the skills/spells that come with it. An immersive story is often a good thing for Jack. Often, he looks for an MMORPG where one levels up comparitivly quickly, since he wishes to try out all the skills a class has to offer. Once he maxes out that character, he will often go looking for another class to try out. The MMORPGs that Jack play often exhibit good graphics.
I know the two comparisons of Jack and Bob are the "extremist" point of views....eeek i'm tired. But anyways, that's my analysis of the two most common types of MMORPG players...
yesh yesh. I should go to sleep. this blog is so unorganized.

Have you ever read this paper by Richard A Bartle. Rather interesting, while written before the advent of modern MMO's(focus is on MUD's the forrunner of modern MMO's), a lot of it still applies.
