A dainty elvin warrior with an inferiority complex and a hot temper.
A thrill-junky rogue who considers defying death the best alternative to boredom.
A cute but scatterbrained sorceress with destructive tendencies.
A tree-hugging nature-priest who wonders why everyone can't just get along.
Together, they are going to save a kingdom from destruction...

...if they don't kill each other first.

FRAYED KNIGHTS PILOT: The Temple of Pokmor Xang
Now Available!

Frayed Knights - an indie computer RPG of high adventure and low humor, has reached a pretty major milestone. The "pilot" episode is now released to the public. We're continuing development on the full version, which is still many moons away. But now we have a stable engine, and we're gathering feedback on how this one plays.

The pilot is a short "demo" adventure - a single quest which should probably take anywhere from a half hour to two hours to explore. Battle pus-golems and pot-bellied priests of Pokmor Xang (the god of boils, blisters, and pimples) in a quest to obtain the Eyes of Pokmor Xang.

Now, the pilot episode is free - mostly. I do have one request. At the end of the game, you'll be taken to a survey page. Here, I ask what you think about the game. I'm going to use this valuable information for improving it with the next edition of Frayed Knights - the full version. I want to know what you think. I already know it's not perfect, but I need to know what comes out and strikes you as particularly good and particularly bad.

Let me know what you think. And I'm going to see if I can't sleep for a week...

Don't forget to visit Tales of the Rampant Coyote for weekly updates as the full version CONTINUES development. But in the meantime - enjoy the pilot episode, and let me know what you think of it.

Huge congrats! Downloading now... It's been a pleasure to watch this project get to this point. I'll post my thoughts and fill out the survey soon!

Thanks. I'd feel more relieved if this was the full release, but that's still many moons away. But I'm hoping that with the feedback from this one, I should get a pretty good idea of where I need to improve, what I need to fix, and what parts I really need to focus on.

Congratualations on this release.

I've been reading your articles as you put them out (here and at your blog), and my thoughts are always the same, "Man this guy is prolific.".

Of course, I've really been looking forward to this release. After reading about some of the concepts you're experiementing with ("drama stars", etc.) I've been raring to see how they work out.

I'll be seting aside time to play tonight and giving feedback later for sure.

Meanwhile (after you take a well earned breather) keep up the good work. Your effort and willingness to share are a real inspiration. (Kudos to the team working with you too.)

Got the email. Feel free to host it if you want - just let me know where to point the link.

We've got a pretty beefy server with dual OC-48's (shared... of course), but I think some of the spikes this morning were taxing the CPU.

I've gotten lots of responses - THANK YOU - and most of them have been pretty positive, though ALL of them offer some great suggestions.

While I'll be maintaining the pilot for a while, we're splitting off the full version as a "new" project - almost like a sequel (which just happens to incorporate the original). The advantage of this system is that we get a chance to learn from our mistakes. I appreciate people pointing out our mistakes... :)

Awesome work. Great to see you make it to this point! I'll check this out and give you feedback when I can.

Looks great! Been following this one for a while. I didn't see a Mac download -- will there be one available for the pilot or the final game?

Jay Barnson   (May 02, 2008 at 19:48 GMT)
I am planning on a Mac version for the final release, but the pilot was more of an experimental release to gather feedback, and was limited to the PC.

Ah, okay. If you're low on feedback, you can make a Mac release of the demo and I'll tell you what I think. Otherwise, I'll just wait for the full version. I'm at least glad to hear a Mac version is in the pipe -- that's more than most games, so thanks. :)

I don't currently have a Mac to develop on, so whipping out a Mac build can be a little tricky.

I hear ya'. I haven't yet gotten comfortable compiling Torque on the Mac, otherwise I would offer to help in this instance. Sorry!
