Well, I went back into my Volumetric Cloud Class, in order to optimize it a bit. Phew, who knew how hard of a challenge that would be...

I shaved off a few instructions and got them a bit faster...

I also fixed up some explosions for some fighters, as well as reparing some overall bugs.

Of course, the only reason you are reading this is to see the screenshots, so here you go:

Inside a cloud.

Outside the same cloud.

A really, really big cloud with ships nearby.

With some texture fixes, the Carrier is back in action :)

And here is an avi of a fighter exploding:

WOW at the explosion effect. Extremely well designed.

wow! I love that vid! the explosion effect looks amazing!! nicely done!

It would be awesome if ships or explosions actually interacted with the clouds in some way. Explosions would push them away or ships flying through would create rifts.

About the explosion, it would be great if there was a hint that it was going to burst with the ring. The ring looks nice, but to have some cue (smaller explosions before hand or a kind of a vaccuum effect) that something that big is coming would be visually really nice as it would let the player know the fireworks were on their way.

Other than that, this is looking pretty cool. Nice work. :)

Always looking good Mike.

Looks Awsome, Mike!
It's TSE, right?
Any chance to have the cloud as a resource/pack? ;)

Mike Kuklinski   (Jun 10, 2006 at 18:57 GMT)
deGrandis: Well, it is only a fighter exploding... capships will have more spectacular effects.

Gaevoy: TSE, naurally. And maybe someday.

Cool!

Suprisingly, my explosion effects only use 4 particles... :) The missiles use more, but you don't see them there, but they need more because they are smaller, and need 'denser' explosions.

In newer builds, objects exploding that are a fighter or larger leave behind mini-dust clouds that disappear after a while. It's an interesting effect.

Beautiful.

Looks really nice, can we fly into the cloud , or it always sits in the background ?

Mike Kuklinski   (Jun 11, 2006 at 18:08 GMT)
Well, seeing as they are inside the cloud technically, I assume you can go inside :)

ah some screenshots at last :]
- looks pretty good - jst a couple of things - it would be nice if the clouds didnt look so flat, unaffected by
light..perhaps this is deliberate, but it looks odd. Also the planet looks, well a little too bumpy..almost like
it has something growing on it...still the skyboxes, flares explosions and glows look kinda neat..

i want to see those ships moving and blowing each other up :] - yes please ;)
