Blog post

Sure it may be a bit self-serving to call my own work hot, but hey, what good is a blog if I can't beat my own chest every once in a while?

It isn't just a pride thing either. I'm happy about completing MGEC for all of the following reasons:

1. MGEC is the pinnacle of a long personal journey. (See below to learn more.)

2. MGEC provides a seamless follow-on (harder than it sounds) to my first book GPGT. i.e. If you liked my first book I think this one will also serve you well.

3. MGEC acts as a gateway-guide for experienced Torque users who want to jump from script-only mods to C++ engine changes. Users can learn to mold TGE(A) to their game's own unique requirements. In short, you no longer need to be afraid to modify the engine. With this guide you can do it!

4. Lastly, now that I have finished the books, I can start to re-focus my energies on other projects. It would be fair to say that I've been tempted on more than one occasion to work on side-projects, but I've had to reign myself in, in order to get the work done. No more. I can now set the whirlwind loose.

I realize that some folks may be sitting on the fence still, trying to decide if this guide will be useful to them. If you're one of these people, please check out these links to get more information on my second book:

Table of contents
The Introduction
Chapter 01 - Exercise #1 - Using The Kit
Chapter 10 - Exercise #1 - Compiling Torque In Windows
Chapter 10 - Exercise #2 - Compiling Torque In OS X
Another blog I wrote about it.

If you have decided you want a copy, it can be found at Amazon, as well as Barnes and Noble.

More about the journey
Finally, as noted above, this has been a very long journey for me. Some time after finishing my last book, and before finishing this one, I wrote up a post-mortem on the topic. If you're interested and never got the chance to read them, you can read them here (on the GG site):

GPGT Postmortem - Part 1 of 3 (History)
GPGT Postmortem - Part 2 of 3 (Project Analysis)
GPGT Postmortem - Part 3 of 3 (Lessons Learned)

, or you can download a PDf version here: .

Note: I did learn from the lessons listed in part 3 of the post-mortem and I think you'll agree that I applied those learnings well to my second book.

Thanks for reading!

Congrats Ed!

And slick cover. That should help people spot it when browsing the shelves.

Awesome! I've added it to the list of things to buy when I win the lottery :)

Congrats!

I'll certainly get this to read. My game is single player only, but I think it's important to note that even single player game coding has to take into account the multiplayer client-server structure of the engine. That's how it was created and it's essential to understand it regardless of how many players the game is targeting.

Being an experienced TGB scripter and done very extensive use of it, without having any C++ prior knowledge, does this book is right for me?
Can I expect to convert my scripting knowledge into C++ engine skills with the help of your book?

Congrats on getting the book done!! I got a lot of use out of your GPGT. I've pre-ordered this one from Amazon - has a release date been set?

Hello Edward,
Your "Game Programmer's Guide to Torque" was wonderful, I've used time n time again. Would your new book be able to cover this question I posted in this thread http://www.garagegames.com/mg/forums/result.thread.php?qt=74237 If it does I'm heading to chapters asap. Thx.

This is an awesome anouncement. It will be nice to learn the inner workings of the engine. :-)
Congrats on getting it out the door.

Thank you Edward.
Just received my "The Game Programmers Guide to Torque" edition today, ordered through Amazon.com.
I would have bought your new edition but it is not yet available at Amazon.com.
Looking forward to getting it as well.

Ed,

Just a brief note to make you smile. Amazon sends me a computer book offer just about once a week trying to entice me to spend my hard earned cash on the latest and greatest. This weeks offering was, awww, you guessed it.

And they offered to bundle it with the 2nd Edition of Ken Finney's 3D Game Programming All in One. It was a real treat to see quality books for sale by people you have met on the engine you use.

Best of luck. Hope you sell lots.

Nice! I'll be getting a copy soon! I loved the last book and use it as a reference all the time.

Nice one Ed, we'll get it in the studio, and support the cause...

By the way, the game on the cover looks totally awesome, they must be such talented people involved in that... 8) *nudge nudge, wink wink*

LOL !!!

Thanks for writing a new book...I enjoyed your first book when I purchased Torque almost a year ago.

I'm just starting to edit the engine with my own ideas and learn how they work. This will be a great helping hand...PERFECT...just what I needed. I have pre-ordered your new book and I can't wait to lock myself into my computer room for a week. By the way, I called my girlfriend and told her I ordered your new book...she didn't like the idea... :)

"That's all you ever do is play on that stupid computer!"

THANKS and GOD BLESS!
