Eric Elwell: Intern, artist, friend. Rest in peace buddy. We hope you have gone on to a better place.

Captions for above from left to right:

1. Eric hard at work getting the Mighty Fist demo ready for GDC.

2. Eric shows his love for Marble Blast Ultra.

3. Eric and fellow intern Anthony Fullmer play the 'Tim Aste Orbz mini game.' The innovative game play involves the player scrolling through the high-score list and trying to get it to come to rest on score #37: TIM. As in Tim from Tim Aste's content packs. Part game, part performance art, the sounds effects for the game are performed live.

4. A random picture from the GG whiteboards.

Pictured below: The memorial set up in Eric's honor as seen above the desk where he once sat while creating a mix of game ready art assets and random comments. Not pictured: The memorial of the unknown intern and the eternal flame set up in honor of Eric and all the other interns that have moved on to the big contracting gig in the sky.

@Mark - until I got to the contracting, part I wondered how the hell he died.. you completely nailed the tone and somberness... lmao

I was kind of worried there I actually thought he had died.

You forgot to include the pics I took of you in a drunken stupor the night Eric was taken from us...I don't think i've ever seen a single curb get doused by more malt liquor in my life.

I don't think I ever offended someone as many times in a day in my life, on such a repeated basis. Best of luck to the future, where-ever that may lead.

Is this supposed to be a 'fuck you' because he left GG internship, which is unpaid, for an actual paying job, which is part of what the internships are listed as providing interns the portfolio and experience to get. Is this a warning to all future interns not to betray the guys at GG? Or was he just a dick head about leaving? This sounds pretty harsh to me. Was.. what's his name again? Eric Elwell. Was he an ass or something? I thought he did the cool demo game Fist Something and everyone loved his work? Or is this just a joke? I don't get it. It seems like it's a fuck you to me? Some kind of a 'you are dead to us' thing? Or is this just Mark McCoy with his wicked evil subversive sense of humor? :P

Brian Ramage   (Jun 10, 2006 at 04:20 GMT)
It is most certainly not a "fuck you" to Eric. It's a mix of light-hearted jabbing and truly sincere tribute to very talented artist and cool human being whom we all respect. He's one of the good ones that got away. Have a great trip Eric, you are going places man.

How could anyone be mad with Eric Elwell? I'm not sure it's possible. Talented artist and class act all the way.

God rest his soul.

:P LOL

I was just fucking with you guys. I had to after reading about the DEATH of the coolest 2D artist ever! You guys really had me crushed. Mark is evil!! I was really upset that a poor intern of such talent had died. I'm thinking someone should re-name Mark McCoy, Darth Mark. For his dark hilarious evil dry sense of humor. Best laugh of relief I've had in a damn long time.

I may have been too easily ready to be upset that someone died because my mother in law almost died a couple days ago in the middle of the night. But still... fricken academy award for having me fooled the entire blog until the last 4 words. :P Just evil. And great. :)

I dont know about class act...he WAS kind of a conceited jerk, may he rest in peace. But, in light of the circumstances, I don't see how I can really be mad at him anymore...

Hi Mark.

I used to wake up in a cold sweat in the middle of the night and Eric would be hovering over me when we lived in the intern house...

Jesus, you got me scared till I read the comments and re-read the last paragraph. Not even funny! :)

Matthew Langley   (Jun 11, 2006 at 04:17 GMT)
Alas, poor Eric! I knew him, Horatio: a fellow of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy.

I would have thought the title of the article would have given it away... "RIP: Eric Elwell 2005 - 2006. We hardly knew you..." ...he was only alive for one year?

What can we say...the guy was good for his age
