It's over....

The awaited hour approached like a cresendo; all the while THEY waited. THEY waited for roughly 30 hours in sitting on the pavement, in camping chairs, and even tents to keep the elements at bay. THEY waited, and waited, and waited; and not really any of THEM complained. And, at the appointed[annointed?] hour, THEY were rewarded. In fact, THEY were rewarded throughout the entire Event. THEY were rewarded by a very caring staff of Sony employees with free hot coffee in the morning, free lunch prepared on site, free water, free rain gear when things turned slightly 'misty', and a free live Rock show in the streets they were permitted to close down; eventually 3 lanes of a 4 lane street in downtown San Francisco in the middle of a working day.... Things were kept orderly and it must have been a trememdous undertaking, keeping several lines of customers 'comfortable' while they waited patiently.

Who is THEY. The market base that Sony has cultivated over the years to become a very loyal group dedicated to promoting the core product.

Over the past two days[my participation ended at 3AM-5 hrs ago...], I've been involved[up to my ears] in the release of the PlayStation3, here in SF. It was a huge undertaking. A street was closed, first one lane; then as the release approached, we closed another 2 for the stage to be driven into position and things were powered up[ahem, my 'Production' participation]. We had video screens, we had moving lights, we had a countdown timer, we had enough 'support' to bring any Event to a successful conclusion. And we got many more participants than expected...more barricades were ordered. It was non-Stop madness for two straight days.

What surprised me was the level of dedication[back/forth] between customer/manufacturer. I was stunned to discover folks lined up at around 11AM on Wed. to purchase a product that was going to be dellivered[in a most dramatic fashion, ;)], at Midnight the following day...! Equally stunning, was the level of dedication given back to the customer as they waited in line for ages... The patrons were waited on, pretty much hand and foot, by a staff from Sony that waited as patiently as their wards, for things to get 'rolling'... It is fairly amazing to see one of these Events unfold from beginning to end.

It all culminated with a police escort and a 53' tractor-trailer rig pulling up in front of the store to cheering crowds who watched while it was unloaded in front of them[insert drama here].

I am trying to figure out how this simbiosis evolved. Is it that the game platform is of superior quality...or more a factor of {I think} knowing what your paying customer really wants/expects for their money. Not thrusting a product at them, and expecting them to feed[on cue], like a obedient lapdog....

I wish I could upload some images from the Event, undoubtly; it made the news and you've seen a bit of it on CNET or elsewhere. It was something else...at this point, I am a very tired guy.

Can't wait for the next BIG thing...it'll come, always does! I'll be there.

I hate to say it, since I've been a Sony shareholder for the past few years (but not anymore obviously) and have owned PS1, PS2, and PSP, but I think Sony's run is going to come to an end. Despite the enthusiasm of some early adopters, I just see no way they can compete with the much lower price points of their competitors, plus there is a very good chance that the blue-ray may become the next betamax. Also, since they are shipping so few units this holiday season, they are going to be hopelessly behind the other two in terms of installed base, which will turnoff game makers. THEY screwed up, plain and simple.

P.S. A really funny aspect of the Sony rollout, and the huge crowds and all that is that many of the people going through hell to get a PS3 have no interest in actuallly owning or playing it. They simple see it as a way to make a few bucks.

Rex,

Nice post. I'll admit that I'm not a Sony fan, but it's amazing to see that level of dedication to the Playstation 3. In spite of my own misgivings about the company, you've opened my eyes to a few things Sony has done right.

Thanks!

We're waiting. We'll probably be waiting at least a year since there's nothing coming to that console for the foreseeable future that we're interested in. Nothing at all. That's kind of a big surprise for us. We waited almost a year on the 360, but with XNA and TorqueX coming plus a few good titles finally coming out, it was time. The Wii on the other hand, well, all I need to say is Zelda.

Mental Rootkit maybe?

PS2 had a REALLY good run. I'm sure they will probably pull it off this time as well, a company with the resources usually does. But they have screwed up a lot over the last two years (everyone does - just not standing in the spotlight). Explosive batteries, root kit, DRM crap on music CD's that made me stop buying CD's all together, more semi-successful storage media (PSP disks) -

But, for the game industry's sake, I hope they do REALLY well:)

That's what everyone said when Sony entered the consumer desktop market. To this day Sony computers are a couple hundred more than the competition, yet they sell fantastically due to the higher quality and better focus on multimedia.

The PS3 blows the Xbox out of the water as far as what you get with it. To make the comparison fair as far as "price point" is concerned:

PS3 - $600

Xbox 360 - $400 + $200 (2 more 20 gig drives to match the PS3) + $100 (WiFi card to match the PS3) = $700.

Eh, you're assuming that everyone has ample funds, and the desire to spend said funds, for the highest end configuration, which is the same flawed assumption that Sony has made. One can argue that the PS3 is a good value, but one cannot argue that they are not very high priced. You can go buy an Xbox 360 right now for $300, which is a proven price point for game systems over the last decade. And the new nintendo will be even less. People will buy their kids systems at that price for Xmas. But $600? Nobody really knows (except me... but I'm not tellin, hehe, just kidding).

I also would certainly not use Sony's endevor into the PC market as a big success story either. They are, what, #4 or #5 or so at best? (HP = #1, Dell = #2, Apple = #3, then what, Toshiba? Gateway?). Perhaps respectible, but hardly "fantastic".

I'm not saying that Sony is going out of business or anything, and I'm sure their system will hang in there, but given their dominance of the ps1 and ps2, I'd say this release is far more debacle than success story, and I certainly wouldn't pat them on the back for it. We'll see!

Having the most sales isn't the point, turning a profit is. If they make money, let them make better products. I could care less if a 12 year old gets a PS3, I want it for it's quality and features, not because my 7 year old wants it (which he does).

Sony is losing money on the PS3 though. A lot. The only ones turning a profit are the ones reselling them on E-Bay.

And if you weren't at a nice Sony sponsored event for the PS3, it's more likely you got trampled or shot. That's not even a joke. And most likely of all, you didn't get a PS3. It was the worst launch in the history of any major console. Not saying that's all Sony's fault, aside from the terrible supplies. But it's been a pretty scary spectacle on the whole.

Worse than the Xbox 360 launch? Pass me some of whatever you are smoking, 'cause it must be good.

Rex   (Nov 18, 2006 at 14:06 GMT)
Paul, there are individuals in this world who will take advantage of a situation, using whatever means they deem necessary, to further their own ends[remember: opportunities knock but once and sometimes very lightly...not this case though].

Call `em, pirates, gangstas, criminals, scumbags; whatever, you seem to be equating the few instances documented as an indication of the whole, or at the worst, the manufacturer's fault how each individual retailer decided to handle their event. You seem to be speaking from some experienced point of view about how public events are planned and controlled and how someone makes and figures their profits, cool.

Cheers.

Jeppie   (Nov 18, 2006 at 17:21 GMT)
The 360 launch was terrible too. They completely missed the '05 holiday season which was a huge setback for the whole video game industry this year. But the PS3 launch is every bit as bad, but more importantly, they are a year late to the party. Geez, what happened to these video game makers anyway? Sony did such a good job with the PS1 and PS2 launches.

Turning a profit? Heh, like Paul said, Sony is bleeding nothing but red with the PS3's. Their ability to turn a profit on this platform is based solely on their ability to achieve a big installed base and sell lots of games. So sales volume is the only thing that matters with the PS3 at this point.

Jonathon Stevens   (Nov 18, 2006 at 17:28 GMT)
Guys, no console makes money. They are like PCs, they sell the main unit to make money on the add-ons. Consoles exist so they can make money on the games, dev kits, etc. You think they can make an Xbox for less than $200? Think again.

Paul /*Wedge*/ DElia   (Nov 19, 2006 at 01:28 GMT)
I explicitly said the issues weren't really Sony's fault, aside from the ridiculously short supplies. It's mostly a lot of stupid retailers.

Anyways, of course PC's make money, what are you talking about? There wouldn't be companies that sell almost nothing but PC hardware and pre-builts if they didn't. Also Nintendo makes money on all it's consoles. Aaaand the 360 will be turning a profit soon as component prices for it continue to drop (something they royally botched with the original X-Box) =].
