I have been gone for a while but now I am getting back into game development as a hobby. Alot of things have changed at GG. The community seems strong which is a very good sign. New tools and many more content packs are available .
The main reason for my return is that my sons are now old enough to really enjoy playing computer games and I want to expose them to the game creating process. We want to create a simple single player adventure game with the look and feel of world of warcraft. I want to keep the scope small as well. I figured this would make it more fun for them and help to keep their attention. I was thinking of dividing the "game" up into episodes which would reveal a small portion of the story. Each episode would build on itself. I think this will help us stay focused and not feel overwelmed.
We started going down the path of modeling an Elf character in 3D studio Max which I have some experience in but am now thinking we should focus on the environment first. I think this will be simpler for them and can show results faster. I am evaluating a couple of brush editors: Constructor and 3D World Studio. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
I figure we would start by building a simple village area similar to a starting area in WOW. We are in the planning stages of figuring out what assests we will need before actually building anything. While we are planning we are learning and playing around with Constructor. I could really use some help in the texture department. If anyone can recommend any tutorials on the texture process for a brush editor it would be greatly appreciated.
I hope to post progress of our project in the future.

DeleD is another 3D editor you may also want to consider. www.delgine.com
Personally, I use Contructor but in the past I initally used 3DWS and then moved on to DeleD until contructor came along. They are all pretty good, but I guess it comes down to which one you find comfortable to use.
If you haven't done so, I recommend picking up the ArcaneFx pack, it is definitely worth it. Its a great 'spell/magic' pack which can definitely give you a WoW feel.
Also if you weren't aware the Ben Garney's Forest Pack is now free

Anyways, welcome back and above all else have fun with your sons creating games. =)

Thanks for posting. I think Constructor should do what I need and you can't beat the price. I am definately considering the ArcaneFX pack. I will check out Garney's Forest Pack as well.
I am currently a 1.4.2 SDK owner. Should I upgrade to 1.5.2? I understand they dropped the supported mount points to 4. I want to be able to mount more than 4 objects to my meshes and only care about single player game creation right now so I am not worries about network traffic with masks.

I believe the in 1.5.2 among the biggest benefit is that the Torque Lighting Kit is integrated into the engine. Personally, I think it's worth the upgrade but for the time being, you may want to wait upgrading until you have a few models or your basic gameplay down. Work on the game mechanics for now.
ArcaneFX is really worth it, you will have to upgrade to 1.5.2.
