Interns!
Howdy,

This is my first .plan since IGC. The show totally rocked, and I have a bunch of stuff to talk about in the coming weeks. However, I'll keep this .plan short and sweet; I'm just going to talk about our internship program.

At GG, we love to have interns around. And, no, it's not because there's any Monica Lewinsky-esque scandals going on. Nor is it because we particularly like the idea of slave labor (though, I gotta be honest, it helps keep our overhead costs low ;). We like having interns around because they always have cool ideas, fresh perspectives, and lots of energy. It's fun to bring new people into the office, and we can always use help with all the projects we have going.

We're looking for more interns right now, and we need help in the following areas:
-Web programming (there's some cool stuff planned for the website).
-Art (for games, demos, and web work).
-Programming (both for engine / tech development, and for games).
-Marketing (Jay is a guru, but it's always good to have help).
-Documentation (can never get enough docs).
-Production (need help both on the dev and game sides).

Email me at joshw@garagegames to apply!

Interning with us is pretty damn cool, if we do say so ourselves. I was an intern before I got hired here, and I enjoyed it immensely. You come out to the GG offices, work on a bunch of kick-ass (and often top-secret) projects, and it's a great learning experience because there are so many experts in programming, art, production, and business to talk to and work with. Besides the GG crew, BraveTree is right next door and they're full of friendly, expert developers.

There's always something fun to work on here. For example, previous interns have programmed core technology for TSE, created art and levels for games, developed the RTS Starter Kit, coded on games, developed several enhancements for Torque (like the new precipitation system), and done research into AI and other areas. There's always something fun to work on, and this coming year we have more stuff than ever to get done.

Beyond being a great learning experience, interning with us is an awesome resume builder. You're definitely not a cog in the machine here-- you get hands-on, down and dirty experience with all our biggest, best stuff. Also, in the last year, we've hired five employees that started out as interns: Alex, Ben, Robert, Pat, and I all made the transition. So, interning is a very good path to employment with us.

Interns get free housing (includes a good net connection), so the cost of living is just food, entertainment, and personal expenses. There's no pay for being an intern, but we do take the crew out for beers when the whim hits. We're based in Eugene, OR, and it's a pretty city, with a good social scene (not that you'll ever be allowed to leave your desk ;).

All in all, it's lots of fun. If you're interested in interning with us, please do email me at joshw@garagegames. We don't need a formal resume, but whatever information you can provide about yourself, your experience and knowledge, the things you've worked on in the past, and the type of work you're interested in doing in the future will be helpful.

Thanks, I look forward to hearing from a bunch of you, and hopefully getting to work with some of you soon!

Maybe I can use interns to get my new house I just bought painted! I think interns is an awesome idea for a game development company - think of the experience someone can get..... Just great!

what fanTAStic news! Is there a deadline or anything? Obviously, the sooner I can get info/portfolio the better, but I was just wondering if there was an absolute date.

If I wasn't so far away I would definetly apply :(

Ben Garney   (Oct 31, 2004 at 03:52 GMT)
The only deadline is that if you never apply we can never consider your applications... This is an ongoing program, so there's not really a cut off date.

@Ben

Thats good to know. Thanks for the update.

just to add my two cents as a currently functioning GG intern -- it _definitely_ _absolutely_ _kicks_ _ASS_ to work in the same airspace as garage games and bravetree!! Everybody down there is easy to get along with, they all love game technology, and they're always totally helpful when I have questions. It's definitely a one-of-a-kind experience.

There's always a place to stuff more people in -- if you're seriously thinking about it and have the free time, it DO IT DO IT DO IT!!!! You won't regret it.

I definitely plan on applying for the summer of 2005 or 2006. I might not be able to do 2005 because I need to take a math course this summer. How long are the internships? How much money should I save up for food?

Hey,

I just got home from my Internship with GG and I have to say that it was a great time. I am hoping to get back there as soon as possible.

Later, Ben

Joe, internships last 3 months, or more, if you like. As for saving, food in Eugene is pretty cheap, especially if you resist eating out. I average about $200 a month on food, but that's with eating out for about 7 meals a week. When I'm in complete penny-pinching mode I can easily get by on less than $100 a month for food, just by cutting the meals out.

After visiting, I wish I could affford to intern, with a bar and a coffee shop only a block a way from the office I would never leave work.. . . for too long

The only downside to living in Eugene is that it's so easy to get distracted. You've got the mountains to the east, the ocean beaches to the west, the THICK forests, the rivers, the fresh fish, the blueberries and marionberries and blackberries and peppermint and Tillamook cheese -- and that's just the nature stuff. Then there's the university, the restaurants, everything in Portland, all the hippies (and the bakery) in Alpine, the air museum in McMinnville, ...

Yep, I'd love to live in Oregon, but I'm afraid I'd never get any work done.

Hi Ray. :) Man, now I'm thinking about all the cool stuff to do around here.. I won't get any work done for a couple weeks!
