Blog post
I think I have all the "oops" bugs fixed right now. Been doing some minor tweaks to the community page to help improve work-flow, it is still a work in progress and I am open to suggestions (even dividing it into multiple pages). It is a tough problem because everybody uses it a little differently and there is so much data to display.

The plan is to come back from the holidays and give some love to the rest of the site. We have not prioritized the list yet so your suggestions here are very important. Product, Solutions and Training pages will be flushed out too.

I will be out of the office through new years, so no site updates until 2006!

Having all blogs as the default tab is much better.

One of my main flow problems has been the unread posts link isn't always available, and can take a few clicks to get to. It'd be cool if on each forum page there was that link, as well as the mark all as read link (perhaps left justify the unread posts link, and leave the mark all as read right justified?).

I have started to investigate making a firefox plugin anyway if I'm going to be forced to switch from Opera. I'll have a look today and see if I can figure out if there is a easy fix for Opera's problem like you mentioned in another thread.

What's the difference between "community" and "all blogs"? They seem to show the exact same thing.

Community does not include GarageGames or Associates, All is well ... everyone.

Magnus Blikstad   (Dec 22, 2005 at 02:18 GMT)
It does too! (*whines like a little baby* =).

This is the top of the list on the "Community" tab for me right now, exactly the same as on "All.."

Ah it does too ... it didn't used to though. Anyone else having the whole blogs box shift down to below the images of the day? (firefox 1.5)

Weston   (Dec 22, 2005 at 02:51 GMT)
Rick...Just a suggestion.

Since Garage Games is all about community, it might be nice to have the Community link on the main tab bar accross the top. I believe that's the way it used to be. I may be a bit biased in this request as it's the main place I visit :)

Can you please set latest forum posts as the default view on that section.
I normally come here and see what questions people are posing. I like to do that in a glance.
Don't get me wrong, folks blogs are important too, it's just most people use their blogs as a place to show off, which is fine by me, but I'm here to help.
Too bad we couldn't have both the "all blogs" and the "latest forum" stuff on the same page.

Oh yeah I agree, if you are going to use the Community as a selling point, please make that a top link so people can find it easier... Hell I still can't find it half the time.
Thanx!

Rick, any chance you will get Opera browser (what ever that means) back in?

Anton Bursch   (Dec 22, 2005 at 03:59 GMT)
@Rick

Thank you for all of the amazing work done on the website!! I love it! Tell that new guy he's doing a great job too! My wife Melissa and I met him at lunch at IGC. :)

I still get things cut-off in Firefox here and there...and I saw a different Snapshot today that is now gone. Some Tubetwist one..

Jesse (Midhir) Liles   (Dec 22, 2005 at 06:28 GMT)
I agree with Weston, the community link is the first one I click on, and GarageGames.com is my homepage =)
It should be up on it's own spot in the menu bar.

Philip Mansfield   (Dec 22, 2005 at 07:54 GMT)
...and now the Forums tab has been moved to the second tab after Resources.

Can we *please* have 'Read unread posts' link on the forum page itself? On the left hand side inline with the 'Mark all as read' link would be great :)

Greg Ellwood   (Dec 22, 2005 at 09:12 GMT)
I doubt it is possible to find a default for many of the pages to suit everyone.

As I posted in reply to your last Blog I'd like to see a focus on personalisation so that we can all setup the pages as we like.

This would be very easy to do.

-Greg.

My main concern is that the website is near totally unsuable in Opera - The scripts for the communtiy game just don't work.

I would presume there must be some problems in Firefox too, but probably less.

Otherwise nice job! Althought, could we get a link on the TDN back to GG's main page? That would be nice.

Toby.

Agreed with Weston too. A direct community link would rocks.
Pretty cool improvement to the site! Keep the great work ;)

Edit: Nope, rechecked and it was me. :p

What about having some kind of "Resource pick of the day" displayed on the community page? Basically it would randomly pick a different older resource to display each day, but the resource has to be rated at least 4 stars and be no older than 2 years old (to try and keep only useful resources displayed). It's basically a way to get some exposure for some of those great resources that people may not know about.

www.codeproject.com has something similar to this, and I actually find it very useful.

Speaking of Reosurces, I don't seem to be able to find a way of getting to the resources I've flagged as watched. I used to be able to get at those from my account. Now there's a watched threads link, but nothing as I can tell that lets me see my watched resources.

Here a bug report:

TDN login is still a little bit buggy.
If I login on GG site, then go to TDN, it will ask me to login again...

Thanks ;)

The community button should be on the main page - it's the only place I go. :)

Erik Madison   (Dec 22, 2005 at 19:44 GMT)
I for one love it exactly as it's evolving. I have yet to see a change I didn't like. Yes, it now takes me one extra click to get to the main community section, but for that one click, I now get everyone organized much better. I absolutely love the tab controls.
I use Firefox almost exclusively, and AFAIK, nothing is ever lost/misplaced.

FYI The Tabs on the community page should remember the last active tab, as that information is stored as a cookie.

Chris   (Dec 23, 2005 at 05:39 GMT)
The community page is still broken in Opera.

Robert Meuse   (Dec 23, 2005 at 05:50 GMT)
I have a problem that often the webpage starts to eat clock cycles. When I view this resource it sometimes drives the cpu usage to 100 %. I am using Firefox 1.5 and I tested it also in Internet Explorer 6.0. I have not found out what causes it. But it is related to the web page.
What I normally do is
1. Search for "a* path finding"
2. then select the link http://www.garagegames.com/index.php?sec=mg&mod=resource&page=view&qid=8531

And soon afterwards it is in complete runaway.

Chris   (Dec 23, 2005 at 09:31 GMT)
Sounds like open tags (<-- unlikely but possible) or an error in the .htaccess file, specifically with mod_rewrite.

Ron Yacketta   (Dec 23, 2005 at 18:25 GMT)
I can confirm what Robert has reported

using FireFox 1.5 when viewing this page causes 100% cpu utilization under XP from a search for 'a* path finding'

Kudos to and thank you GG for:

1) Fixing the large fonts losing the '...more link' in the boxes problem
2) For putting a link to unread posts up top next to the What New header
3) For doing something about the bandwidth usage... Not too sure what you did, but on dialup the community page is now downright zippy. :)

Some feedback on Firefox 1.5 and IE6 XP

1) The Whats New box doesn't fit to the left of the snapshot box, so it drops down. This seems to be tab header size problem (i.e. the additional space taken up by the 'new' graphic). Sympathies though, cross-browser css is a swine.
2) The 'new' graphic on tabs doesn't show on ie6 on XP.

Good work. Overall a thumbs up for the update to the website update!

Edit: I can't seem to find where to edit my Forum subscriptions? Somewhere off the My account page?

This is my suggestion, a print version of the blogs, somtimes i dont get time to read them online so I regularly print them out and read when I am at work. It would therefore be handy to have a button to print the blogs out, like you can for emails.

-James.

Vernon Finch   (Dec 24, 2005 at 17:06 GMT)
Matthew, click on forums, and look at the top of the page for the link to edit your subsciptions. Took me a bit of hunting to find it the other day as well.

Cisor   (Dec 27, 2005 at 21:30 GMT)
Thanx, Vernon. Who woulda thought?

@Rick

Sorry for double posting - fell free to delete my first post in "Major update in hour" but It's late and I didn't see that there is one more blog from you....sorry.

Anyway here it is:

I have small request. Can you put back that "Teach me how" link where I could just copy and paste commands for posting images, links...for example "["url"]"...I can't remember all of them and that was really helpfull.
