Blog post
Some time last year, I released the starter.fps port I did so TSE owners could do more with TSE.
After I released the port, I kept getting requests for the tse.exe so non TSE owners could try it out... so I released the "Unofficial TSE demo"
Since then, the "Starter.Fps Port" has had over 1000 downloads and the "Unofficial TSE demo" has had around 1100 downloads. (264 downloads this month already)

With GG saying they might be using legions as the new TSE starter.fps pack, it guess I don't need to carry on updating and releasing the port anymore. (Unless they say otherwise)

So, below are the final download links:
v1.3 for TSE projects using MS2 or below: "starterfpsport1_3.zip" (23MB)

v1.3.5 for TSE projects using MS3: "starterfpsport1_3_5.zip" (18MB)
(File size is smaller because I used a better compression setting)

And the v1.3 "Unofficial TSE demo" (which uses MS2) "starterfpsport1_3 demo.zip" (24MB)

(if you get a "missing directx dll" error message, you can download the file from "here")

Thank you to everyone that have downloaded the files... it's been fun working on them :)

What precisely is different? I used 1.2 with MS3 and it worked fine.

Joseph Euan   (Apr 09, 2006 at 17:42 GMT)
@Christian, thanks

@Mike, just a few things like the TAB button (changing to thrid person mode) wasen't working.

Joseph - Thanks for creating the demo, I'm pretty sure everyone in the community appreciates your commit to creating this demo as well and has helped tons getting their projects off the ground.

Gah, such misserable performance. 20-30 FPS. :( i'd really like to get the Shader engine, but the performance is so terrible with my FX5600. What kinda frame rates are others getting?

Joseph Euan   (Apr 09, 2006 at 21:18 GMT)
Thanks Matt.

@Ramen, I get about 100+FPS (geforce 6600) :p

Vashner   (Apr 09, 2006 at 23:42 GMT)
20-30 is miserable? You ever played SWG in a raid?

It's not goint to be any slower than say BF2 or EQ2 on that same pc so it's not a TSE performance issue. It's a 5600 issue.

To develop with it that framerate is good enough to start work and save for better card.

Edit: Joseph, thanks for the stuff man you rock. IMO You should not stop. Keep going.. we need the race car :)

Great job Joseph. Any way to fix the third person mode though?

EDIT:download TSE 1.3.5. The third person works in it.

@Randy, I'm still going to finish the starter.racing pack... :p

Thanks Matt

Nice work Joseph, I'll check this out at some point now I've finally got around to buying TSE :)

I'm mirroring the files:

v1.3 for TSE projects using MS2 or below: "starterfpsport1_3.zip" (23MB)
v1.3.5 for TSE projects using MS3: "starterfpsport1_3_5.zip" (18MB)
And the v1.3 Unofficial TSE demo (which uses MS2) "starterfpsport1_3_5.zip" (24MB)

@Joseph: I just wanted to insert a quick comment here saying the GG greatly respects and enjoys your contributions here with the starter.fps, and I wanted to thank you personally!

I'm downloading this as we speak since my focus for the next several weeks is the TSE Boot Camp (coming up 24-28 April this month!), and wanted to have a nice transition between the Torque Core and the Torque Shader Engine components of the class, and this is perfect! It literally worked with zero problems on my testbed/dev computer.

Once again, thanks! We really do appreciate the effort.

Joseph Euan   (Apr 10, 2006 at 18:52 GMT)
@Martin, thanks for putting up mirrors... is there anyway you can setup a download tracker/counter on them? (like you did on the other downloads)

@Stephen... Thank you

I've really enjoyed porting the pack over (its taught me a lot about TSE), and it's great to see people getting a use out of it.
The TSE bootcamp sounds cool, shame I can't attend... maybe one day :)

Adam Schofield   (Apr 12, 2006 at 23:24 GMT)
@Joseph, does your Starter.Racing port work with TSE MS3 or is there a future port in the wings?

Joseph Euan   (Apr 21, 2006 at 14:00 GMT)
@Adam, sorry for the delay in getting back to you...

I haven't tried the starter.racing port on MS3 yet... If I have time over the weekend, I'll see if I can do anything with it.

I have radeon x800 GTO and my fps is like 25-50

Just let you know, didnt run at all on a Intel Extream 950 card...
But a lot of games using shaders do run on it.

Jonathon Stevens   (Jul 04, 2006 at 18:19 GMT)
When runnin this with HEAD TSE I get

RenderInstManager not initialized - call console function "initRenderInstManger()'

Joseph Euan   (Jul 04, 2006 at 19:17 GMT)
@Jonathon, is that the latest head?
If it is, then I haven't had time to try it out yet.. I'll take a look later.

Jonathon Stevens   (Jul 04, 2006 at 19:24 GMT)
This is head pulled yesterday. So I guess not the ABSOLUTE latest, I'll test it with the ABSOLUTE latest (after the said they fixed the vc8 stuff) in a few. If you do not hear back from me, then it's still an issue.

Bryan Stroebel   (Jul 05, 2006 at 19:29 GMT)
@Joseph - Add initRenderInstManger(); to the client init.cs file right after loadMaterials(); in the initClient function. That will fix that error.

Jonathon Stevens   (Jul 05, 2006 at 19:37 GMT)
@Bryan - I figured as much to fix it, but since I'm just now starting to use TSE, I wanted to make sure that adding it in init would be the proper way to go about fixing it.

Terrence Young   (Jul 06, 2006 at 06:23 GMT)
heh its initRenderInstManager(); I just copied and pasted over. :P BTW this works great and thank you sir!

Bryan or anyone. I am getting the same error and followed your instructions of putting the call:
initRenderInstManager(); after
loadMaterials(); in init.cs in the starter.fps/client/init.cs, seemed simple enough. But I keep getting the same error.
Thanks much;

I am getting the same error, must be the new HEAD.

Jonathon Stevens   (Jul 11, 2006 at 18:51 GMT)
It's easily fixed by adding the function to client init.cs like bryan said. Now let's figure out how to get starter.racing working ;)

Shon Gale   (Jul 11, 2006 at 23:52 GMT)
Well not easily fixed because it still don't work here. My last CVS was 7/1/06 and that was right after the MS 3.5 release announcement. Appreciate any other suggestions for fixing it.
Thanks

Jonathon Stevens   (Jul 12, 2006 at 00:26 GMT)
right after the cvs announcement like 100 updates so you need to get the cvs update again

Shon Gale   (Jul 12, 2006 at 12:12 GMT)
Thanks Johnathan. I should of known and will download again. Thanks again!

Shon Gale   (Jul 13, 2006 at 10:26 GMT)
Ok I downloaded the new CVS on 7/12/06 and followed the instructions above and still get the same error. I don't understand and will work on it later.

Did you clear .dso's? Step through it till you get to that part and see what happens.

Happy Gnome   (Oct 21, 2007 at 14:14 GMT)
@Vashner:

No, it can't be a 5600 issue, because I get 150-200 FPS normally... Check the video drivers. The newer Nvidia drivers work better and faster than the old ones. Check the DirectX version too. Still, 20-30 FPS is acceptable... Better than a TNT2! :) I probably got average 15 fps on those...
