Dexterity articles and forums - another good spot for indie info
Not sure how many out there care or are aware of the cool articles and forums on dexterity.com, but you could spend your time much less wisely than perusing that site if you wish to be a successful indie.

An excellent example of an article I just read there is Shareware Amateurs vs. Shareware Professionals. Though "Shareware" has gotten a kind of bad rep in the last few years, ignoring that word and replacing it with Indie works pretty damned well. Of course, that's keeping in mind try-before-you-buy is basically what shareware means - so a playable demo pretty much counts nowadays.

The articles there are really eye-opening and with the addition of the forums is definitely another good place to get solid information and feedback on how to be a successful indie.

David,

That's a great site. It's going to be great to see GG with a big ol' list of games under it's wings like that.

Very clear and consise articles, worth a read.

Guaranteed 100% bug free software, now that's an interesting marketing statement!

Jesus that amateur vs professional article was a bit bloody harsh!

I agree with a lot of what he says, but he's got a hell of a way of saying it. What he fails to say is that amateur generally relates to inexperience, professionals usually have experience.

It all sounds like some crass "marketing your way to success" book, and frankly I dont want to hear things in those terms.

If you want to see success, simply look at the companies that have come out of the last "shareware" revolution of a few years ago. Id software, 3DRealms, Epic to name a few.

I hope the rest of his site can be read less like some kind of "motivation" seminar.

Phil,

I thought the thing was a little 'preachy' myself but there's alot of good substance underneath those articles that indies should pick at.

I like the motivation article, it's right on the money when it comes to ideas on keeping you mind in check and maintaining drive although I didn't agree with the dressing smart and looking in the mirror for motivation, not if unshaven, boxer-shorts, tee-shirt and socks doesn't count!

I agree though, it does slap a little too hard in the amateurs face. An alternative point of view may be that sugar coating stuff in this tough environment is not going to do anyone any good though, the short-sharp-shock treatment. ;)

Yes, Steve does get a little preachy, and he's definitely doing things I wouldn't do (dressing smart? *looks down at shorts, no socks, and t-shirt with unkempt hair*, uh, no;) ), but the gist of what he is saying is good. Keeping that in mind, it is an excellent site for information, and the forums contain good people just like here.

Blunt, to the point, and no sugar coating is the best way to get to me. I like the article, and the site. Thanks for the resource!

Maybe I'll hang around on his site, just to see how "successful" he thinks he is compared to everyone else.

I'm all for finding good useful information about the indie dev scene, but I found that to be really very patronising and some kind of self flagellation. Kind of like a american footballer shouting at himself before a match. Enough of the "marketing" pseudo-psychology, I'd like cold hard facts please.

If your interesed in marketing stuff, apparently "positioning" by Al Rees? (do a google) is a good one to get (Scott Miller from 3DRealms swears by this methodology).

I thought the antiprocrastination article was good, I might try applying some of the tips in there. Now I just need an article for "how to squeeze 6 personal projects in 30 hours of free time per week".

John,

That's easy, I've got a book entitled, "How to reduce your required sleep". No sleep, more work! Now if I could only reduce my sleep to a 30-minute power-nap then I could write myself that fxOperating system I've been meaning to get around to. :)
