Blog post
I just wanted to share this little story with you guys, after seeing Josh and Magnus and the Prairie games teams work in thier post Here
Just a word of advice for Josh and co when they setup the mmo version....
You know when people are gathering like this in numbers? Turn off any area of effect spells which produce particle effects. Here's why...
The story of the level three idiot
I was once playing everquest when I heard of a large gathering. I was a level 3 enchanter at the time I think. It was in a kill on sight area for enchanters, so I figured it would be super fun!
I cast invisibility (level 1 enchanter) cos it was one of the two spells I knew and I figured to stay alive it might be better to be invis for a while. I then walked into the zone and KABLAM! there were LOTS of people. About the same number as Magnus and Josh have in thier blog images, maybe a few more.
So I'm watching for a while but get a bit bored, apparently everyone is waiting for some big guy to turn up or something (actually it was completely bogus cos nothing ever happens in EQ, but we were desperate).
So to while away some time, I decided to speed-learn my spell book. That is, for all the spells I could cast, I quickly unlearnt and learnt them over and over.
Well, waddya know.. I came to cast my second spell, which basically was the least harmful spell in the game, a level 1 enchanter spell called "ray of light" or something. Its an area affect vision spell, it basically lights up the area of anyone within a given radius, showing a nice bright sparkly particle effect.
Now there I have two really key words.. area effect + lights up the area of ANYONE in the radius. Get it? there were like 100 people all stood there!!!
I cast it.. whiteout.. immediate and utter whiteout.
Immediately, there are /tells saying "OMFG I just got stunned, anyone not affected? Someone pull us out of here" and such. Multiplied by 100 :)
Of course, the other fun thing about this spell is that it lasts about 10-15 seconds for anyone in the area EXCEPT the caster, where it lasts about a minute. So picture the scene, there are about 100 level bazillion characters all having just been massively stunned by something unseen and having NEVER been taken like that before. I mean these guys must have been power levelling since they were tadpoles and had been staring coca-demons in the face and laughing as they swatted the devil himself. Here they were all laid low by some unknown force so apparently all-powerful to have been insta-stun from out of nowhere with NONE of the ultra-protective armour doing a thing and of course everyone running around not knowing a thing and being complete unable to see anything.
So after about 25 seconds, people are starting to pull themselves together. They're amazed that something so powerful was coming to the event and theyre looking around preparing for battle. Speculation is that some like super special level 500 character is coming to the event, people are crossing themselves and getting ready the holy water and getting thier best bashing weapons and spells ready to cast....
And they see this tiny puny little lvl 3 elf enchanter running around.. glowing his ass off and generally looking dodgy and suspicious.
At which time, my heart sinks as one of them finally figures it out.. "KILL the ****** ELF!!" appears on about 100 lines of my text chat as I finally figure out what Ive done and Ive got maybe seconds to figure a way out of it. In a flash (literally) I decide that the best bet is to get out of there. My only hope of survival is to pull the same trick again, so I line myself up with the exit of the zone in my view and cast the spell again.
White out... instant and perfect.
I am outta there!!!! The most fun thing I EVER did in that game, bar none. The sheer perfect stupidity of it all, the sheer brilliance of how a lowly level 3 maggot managed to **** off so many uber-high level almost god-like players with only my own ineptitude to guide me.
Ah yes, fond memories. In fact from a year of playing EQ, that is about the only fond memory I have. I hope MOM-Online has some of those fond events for you guys too :)

Version 1.1 of the game should be quite a rocket. We'll see :)

We actually had some similar, although not quite as severe, problems with the test. In MoM you can carry a personal light source (a torch, or a lantern, etc) and it got pretty bright with 20 or so of those in the same spot. (you can see it in the posted screenshots where the ground goes all white, it was even worse before we told people to turn their lights off =).

Altough I just can't help but to think of Leroy Jenkins, any relations? ;)

MoM is really cool, though, I have very high hopes for that game. Keep rockin', Josh!
Great read, as always!
