3ds max rant
3ds max rant begin:

What is it with 3DSMax crashing when opening files?

The spitfire model is max 5.0, I can load it, Rog can load it, Christophe crashes.. Seb and co crash.

The bf109 model, Christophe (5.0) can load it, I (5.0) CANT load it, crashes.. Seb, crashes.

The mustang model, Seb is ok, both myself and Christophe crash.

Is there some unique talent it takes to actually save a file in 3dsmax so that it DOESNT store some stupid information that crashes other installs? For instance, it seems to save configuration info that is TOTALLY irrelevant to the scene, settings for DLL's that dont exist or whatever.

Is there some special voodoo we must undertake when trying to actually save a file that WONT crash other people's machines?

I mean, the fact that a three and a half grand peice of software crashes at all is amazing, but loading a file?

So yes, I'm having a rant, we DO NOT need this kind of mess when we're trying to get the demo ready for IGC. Thanks Discreet.

Phil.

Would this be linked to plugins you might have or not have on some computers?
Typically if it crashs it will save a recovery file, which you can often re-open. Otherwise, just export the model and re-load it in a clear max file.

I seem to recall max5 being particulary iffy about saving/loading files (but I may remember incorrectly, my memory isn't what it should be).
But as Toby said, it's not just some plugin that's causing the problems?

to get max to work with minimal crashes, it's best to sacrifice a small goat to the dark gods... it sometimes helps to appease max, it also helps with failing dial up connections and the steam client.

Hey Linhart, do you know if sheep work too? Or maybe monkeys? Maybe a trainee will do. Phil, find us a goot spot on the lawn in front of Discreet, I will get the dry wood.

For dial up connections I used to dance the chicken bone swing, kinda worked, when it wasn

Make sure you collapse the stack before saving.

You running Max 7? Strange that 2 can load and 2 can't. Are the directX versions and video card the same on all 4 machines?

What about logging with Max? I have not used it for a while so I don't remember if it has an error log.

Anthony Fullmer   (Sep 28, 2005 at 04:25 GMT)
Phil, did you click the "Don't Suck" box before you saved your file? Because when my max files crash, generally it is because I forgot that step...

Argh they are pimping out Max 8 now? Is there even a export plug in for DTS MAX 8? lol..

I love software that, when you're missing a plugin for a file, simply crashes rather than telling you that you are missing a plugin.

That's just damned good design if you ask me!

@Phil

Check that all versions of max ar actually the same. Max 5 had a free upgrade that moved it to 5.1 or 5.5 (I upgraded my max to 7 a while back so I can't quite rememebr how the max 5 versioning went). It may be as simple as some of you running a non-patched version of max, which would cause the problems you are seeing.

The patch is available free of charge on the max support site

hope that helps

Anthony Fullmer   (Sep 30, 2005 at 22:05 GMT)
@Peter, thanks for that man. I heard that there was a Max 7.5, and I was considering upgrading, but I wasn't sure where to get it (leave it to me to forget considering the software's support site...) *smack* duh. Anyways, thanks again.
