3ds max rant
3ds max rant begin:
What is it with 3DSMax crashing when opening files?
The spitfire model is max 5.0, I can load it, Rog can load it, Christophe crashes.. Seb and co crash.
The bf109 model, Christophe (5.0) can load it, I (5.0) CANT load it, crashes.. Seb, crashes.
The mustang model, Seb is ok, both myself and Christophe crash.
Is there some unique talent it takes to actually save a file in 3dsmax so that it DOESNT store some stupid information that crashes other installs? For instance, it seems to save configuration info that is TOTALLY irrelevant to the scene, settings for DLL's that dont exist or whatever.
Is there some special voodoo we must undertake when trying to actually save a file that WONT crash other people's machines?
I mean, the fact that a three and a half grand peice of software crashes at all is amazing, but loading a file?
So yes, I'm having a rant, we DO NOT need this kind of mess when we're trying to get the demo ready for IGC. Thanks Discreet.

Typically if it crashs it will save a recovery file, which you can often re-open. Otherwise, just export the model and re-load it in a clear max file.

But as Toby said, it's not just some plugin that's causing the problems?

What about logging with Max? I have not used it for a while so I don't remember if it has an error log.

That's just damned good design if you ask me!

Check that all versions of max ar actually the same. Max 5 had a free upgrade that moved it to 5.1 or 5.5 (I upgraded my max to 7 a while back so I can't quite rememebr how the max 5 versioning went). It may be as simple as some of you running a non-patched version of max, which would cause the problems you are seeing.
The patch is available free of charge on the max support site
hope that helps
