Blog post
why we need a separate section for displaying GG shots..pretty much the way we have a GG .plan section and a developer .plan section
i had posted my dev snapshot which came online around 1.00 pm EST on March 19th.

suddenly at around 6:00 pm or so on the 19th..the dev snapshot section went crazy first my shot went to 22nd March and then went back to the orginal date...

and then it was replaced by the current snapshot. which is a pretty nice shot of the Shader Engine and much more deserving of the Dev Shot slot than mine...and was posted by rick overmann, a garagegames employee...

but my grouse is as per the "submission page"

Quote:

Each image will be displayed on the Make Games home page for about 24 hours and then archived in the gallery.

So it was kind of unsettling to me to see my shot get around 6 hrs max of time and then be replaced by a garagegames post. I thought long and hard about posting this... i even deleted a post i had made earlier complaining about this incident... in the "Feedback" section...

I decided that it was time to suggest an alternative...

I believe it shall be nice to have two sections on the Dev Snapshot pages one for General Member Postings and one for Garage Games Own postings... Pretty much the same way the .plans are...that way the queues need not interefere with each other....

The dev snapshot is a great way for an indie project to "advertise" ...in fact two of our team members joined up after they saw the earlier shots... It is invaluable for a small dev team like ours and It would be nice to get at least 24 hrs on the gallery shot of the day section to catch some interested eyes... and get the word out so to speak.

I vote for a better control of the submissions, specially the time they stay up.

I too thought it was a shame that this shot didn't last long, it's not the first time either. There used to be some strange timing problems with IotD, I remember one of Melv's screenshots lasting a whole 20 mins.

In this case i'm sure you can see why it was replaced? I'm sure if you do another one they'll post it once the GDC stuff is sorted. If I recall your first shot managed plenty more than 24 hours... you win some you lose some ;)

hi gareth...

i understand that..and that's why i deleted my crib post :)

i just thought i should take the opportunity to make a request (which is productive) than to crib (which is counterproductive anyday) :P

GG has been a heaven for Indie Developers... and i am proud to say this.. one of the few places where i have remained an active member.... for about two years now... just because of the simple fact that Jeff and his team are always ready to listen to the small guy...

i hope something nice comes out of all this...

thanks for the support adib

I don't speak for GarageGames, but I'm fairly certain that your image is still in the cycle, it was just moved back so they could show off the image they have now.

Hey, your game looks great. I missed it in the dev snapshot but caught it here. Good work.

hi robert,

it is alright... i just wanted to make a suggestion to GG...about having two separate queues for dev shots and TGE/GG shots... that way...the TGE/GG shots do get more time at the page.... especially whenever a new enhancement comes in or some feature is demoed at a trade show...

Eric Risser   (Mar 21, 2004 at 05:22 GMT)
sorry to hear that, it happens to the best of us

Saurav,

Not a bad idea. I'm sorry that your image got taken down before 24 hours was up.

I don't speak for GG either, but I'd bet Robert is correct; your image may well be on the way back up. I think the guys in the office were just excited to get info out there... everybody is heading out to GDC on Monday, and this was the last chance to post something before taking off.

As for your idea, I'm sure it will be considered. Everything is crazy, crazy, crazy right now at the office, of course, so even if the idea catches on, don't expect a move immediately or anything.

In any case, I really liked your screenshot, and hope it comes back up in a while. Keep up the great work.

Saurav,

Sorry we didn't send you an e-mail straight off, we've been so busy, please accept our apologies - we were attempting to put it back in the to be displayed queue, after our news release was breaking and we needed a place to put the shots I was sending out to other news sites. Your shot could hold its own even after the shader shot - so again my apologies for not having coordinated this more elegantly.

I'm not sure we'll get your shot set back to the front of the queue, but email after GDC and we'll work it out. It was a timing issue and please blame me - the marketing guy (they should always be flogged for such things).

Not to highjack your thread, but this is a good discussion:
To your suggestions - we've discussed doing some re-organization, more around having better space for artist galleries, than dedicated space for GG. Its a screen real estate issue. We rarely have shots that are GG dev. shots (we bumped Tim's shot and then reposted it for our sneak peak).

I kinda miss seeing models in process (although getting them looking sweet in game is great, you sometimes lose the behind the scenes on the art creation process.

My question is where are all the screen shots. I would say we don't reject much and sometimes go over a week without a new submission. With all the great projects being built just with TGE let alone other engines it would seem like we'd hear from some of these projects more often than once a year (I suggest quartly reports or schedule a Dev. snapshot on your milestone schedule so we see the progress - although we understand it doesn't always show in the screenshots).

I understand it takes time to composit a post (again I apologize Saurav), and take what can seem like a risk to jump infront of a jury of your peers (so far no one had died), with the thought "I just don't want to show it until its its good enough" (we get that at IGC too). I remind everyone that in addition to creating some buzz about your game (even if its just in our dev. community), this gives a way for all of us to stay aware of eachothers progress and collaborate more.

Outta sight, outta mind... means sometimes lack of any evidence to the contrary we mistakenly assume games that are still in heavy duty dev. may have been abandoned (usually thats when we don't get email replies more than dev shots).

So keep up the .plans, everyone should use them to give status reports (even when you're keeping everything verry secret). Saurav we'll work out the dev. shot.

jay,

there is nothing to appologize for... as i pointed out in my post... i understand... and i sincerely feel that the TSE shot was a more deserving candidate for the shot of the day slot...

i function as our outfit's marketing guy... so i know how it is :)

don't worry about getting the post back in queue... i shall submit a new post of level in its hi poly version soon... a lot of people have seen the post because of this discussion...and that was the primary purpose of me posting the shot in the first place.. :P

I do agree that it is very essential to let the shots out at regular intervals just to sync up with the world outside and get somef resh air in...

i agree with you... on principle about separating actual screenshots from concept and other in-progress stuff...

what i would like to propose is an art gallery section simillar to the forums with at least four sections :

a) Screenshots
b) Concept Art
c) Renders and Other In-Progress Work shots
c1) Characters
c2) Places
d) GG/TGE Images

It would be nice if GG tried to develop an artists community in the same vein as the programmers community... may be later give space for personal galleries of artists or showcases based on themes.. like Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Histroical, Warfare etc.

the Shot of The day thumbnail can be rotated randomly / or periodically to show the latest in these forums one at a time...

thanks for the response though

regards
