I'm an Internet Developer who's dreamed of gaming all his life, and want to get into the industry BADLY. Now if I could just find some of that "free time" everyone's been talking about...
The synopsis sums it up. I'm tired of the corporate world. I want to have fun, and if I'm going to work 100 hours a week, want it to be for doing something that I enjoy more.
My largest issue is the jack of all trades mentality. I find all aspects of game design interesting, and have coded some, modelled some, textured some, and even done simple sound effects and music. But I think, most of all, I'm interested in design, because it touches ALL of these things.
The other curse is that I'm in the Maryland, DC metro area. While we do have great shops nearby, like Bethesda Softworks, Firaxis, and others, the market is not that hot here. While I might eventually pick up and move, it'd have to be a really good deal, as my wife as close family in this area, and it would be a big change.
I'm always looking for opportunities, and intersting info on how to really break in. I'm hoping that GG will help me get there. Drop me a line if you have some interesting info!

Good luck with your endevours. I grew up in the Maryland, DC metro area...but in seattle nowadays.
Youve taken the right step by signing up here...there are a lot of "like-minded" people in the community who share your eagerness.
Good-luck

It is hard to keep to one field, I'd say design is one of those REALLY hard area's to convince people about. Go for level design and try and make some breathtaking levels for a game (try using a popular engine editor like UnrealEd or use a Quake3 editor). Also, make it clear WHY you choose to layout your levels, including notes and sketches and layout plans.
Its very good to get a speciality in a specific field (so even as a designer, its better to understand a given field of design very well). So I guess you'll have to start specialising (even as a general designer).
All I know is that hard work shows. The more work you put into it, the more it shows.
Phil.
