Blog post
Hi! This is my first blog post.

I've seen a lot people on the forums and in comments saying that they use wings 3d to make their static models and then use all kinds of other (not-so-free) modelers (mostly milkshape) to export them to .dts or .map. We need a plugin for wings that will allow direct exporting to .dts and/or .map.

I've tried tons of modelers and wings turned out to be the best. Plus IT'S FREE!

Cheers!

I'm sure there would be a number of people happy should you decide to write the exporter.

I took a look at writing an exporter for Wings3d, but the whole "written in Erlang" thing was a real problem. I agree 100% with you that it's the best modeling tool I've used.

I've had fairly good luck with Wings3d's .obj exporter, then importing into UV Unwrap Pro or Hexagon for UV mapping, then exporting back out to .obj, then importing back into blender to prep for an export to .dts.

I'm still a blender newbie, so unwrapping and skinning in blender is currently beyond my pain threshold.

When it works and doesn't crash (and it currently does not import .3ds UV coords and materials), Hexagon is tolerable.

Yeah, I use wings to model. But I don't mind exporting to blender, it's not a big issue really. .dts exporters are just annoying to program apprantly.

And Blender is also free... but yeah. Better export / compatibility between modeling software and Torque across the board would be a good thing.

@ David Blake - I'm really not that good at programing so writing the exporter myself is out of the question :-D.

yeah been round and round with this a couple years ago the DTS format itself is the issue it is in serious need of an overhaul but I don't think that is going to happen any time soon. I have heard good things about wings. Prefer Silo myself but then again it is not free. Anything is preferable to modeling in blender though. My pipeline uses Maya. Personally if GG is gonna dedicate resources I hope they do them for the major packages. I don't know about the other exporters but the Maya one is in need of a good deal more functionality. There are things in the DTS format that are there but no one has ever bothered implementing in any of the exporters. DTS has been sorley neglected for several years now.
