It's been quite some time since anything Orbz related has been discussed. Thanks to the incredible community support from the player 'Slacker', an all new course pack has been released. This new pack contains a total of 34 unique courses, all created by the community (except for a handful that were made by myself before I was a full time 21-6 employee).

So for those out there who were not playing Orbz because its levels had become stale and the servers were always down... give it another go! Slacker and I are working together to get more course packs out. He and I are also now both in charge of the servers, and we will be watching them relentlessly. If one goes down, it will be up to us to make sure it gets put back up asap.

If you haven't played Orbz, this is the perfect time to check it out. Download the demo here at Garage Games, and if you love it like most people do and purchase a copy, go to www.orbzonline.com to download Course Pack 5!

For those who were waiting for some new maps to play again, welcome back to Orbz! Now get in there and let's have some fun!

Oh oh ... I haven't played but once or twice since I achieved the #1 rank. Don't suck me back in ... I've got games to make!

Hey, cool looking levels. Played a few games... been so long!

Unfortunately, I got reprimanded for using "negative powerups". Huh?

Dave Calabrese   (Aug 03, 2006 at 22:02 GMT)
Negative powerups, Matt? What's going on there?

Matt Sayre   (Aug 03, 2006 at 22:14 GMT)
Dude, I dunno. I just used freeze and teleport a couple times and they got all uppity! I personally love that part of the game.

Keith Frampton   (Aug 03, 2006 at 22:41 GMT)
Yes, this is very cool to be a more active part of all this now. I'm Slacker in Orbz. It's because of this game that I found this site & started to get into everything here the way I have. To answer the question Dave about the negative powerups, there is a group of players who hate the use of the powerups like the freeze frame, teleporter & goober. Attitudes like that will only serve to drive away players. If they want to do something like that, they should play in password protected rooms if they want to enforce rules like that. Not all the players are like that, but it only takes a few to make a bad experience for others.

To end this on a positive spin, go play Orbz if you haven't in a while! There are a lot of community courses there if you haven't played any! As Dave mentions above, more will be forthcoming over time to keep things fresh. I'm sure there are others in the GG community who can come up with new & interesting maps to play.

I'm not into the negs either ... I like the game based purely on the good karma method. You miss ... it's because you did it yourself. Nothing's more annoying than someone freezing you just before you collide with a star and then taking it so they can break your chain. It's just plain mean. Considering that the game is just as fun without such 'negative' energy I see no point to it really. I'd rather be mad at myself for missing straight up.

Keith Frampton   (Aug 04, 2006 at 02:24 GMT)
Well.... it can be quite fun when you turn the tables on them too... imagine someone decides to activate the freeze frame when you are getting close to hitting that star. As they are about to take your star, you activate your own freeze frame & take it anyway. Strategy like that can be quite good. :)

Of course, some would go overboard & use them every time, all the time, but in the end, moderation with them seems to be the best approach.

You know you want to get back into playing the game again Jeremy... go on... you can take that little break from coding... we all need a break every now & then. ;-)

Matt Sayre   (Aug 04, 2006 at 03:56 GMT)
I think setting up a server for those who don't like the "negative" power ups is a good way to go. I just prefer interacting with the other players more, and those power ups are a fun way to interact, whether dishing it out or taking it. It seems way too solo and lonely just going after star after star.

Anyway, man... Orbz is a fantastic game. Gonna see if I can climb the leaderboard again.

Guys, you shouldnt really have to monitor servers yourself. You really should have some automated system doing this for you.

Great stuff though!
