- Summary:
- Having spent my under-10 yrs making boardgames, it was a natural progression to start making computer games after we got our first Apple II when I was 11. Throughout my teens I was mostly using BBC Micros and Archimedes. Published a game in Personal Computer World in 1984 when aged 14. In those pre-Internet days it was mostly my friends (and their friends) playing my games, but they did spend hours and hours doing that.
Most of the 1990s were spent on career building (I`m a university lecturer with a PhD in Information Technology since 1998). I did write a substantial shareware game for the Amiga in the early 1990s: it can still be found if you search for `Critical Hit`. I have also written a lot of bespoke business software.
Since about 2000 I have managed to converge my academic career and my gamemaking.. my chosen research area is Collaborative Virtual Environments -- basically, using game technologies for supporting `serious` distributed collaborative work. The skills learned in my research apply to my games, and the skills learned making my games apply to my research.
