Summary:
whoops. I updated this last when I was, what, 14? 15? Wow! So much has changed . . .

I have been spending most of my time working as a scripting/sql guru with 2 other coders, on an enormously complex online application. In fact, as I'm typing this, management has approved our request to pleasepleasepleasePLEASE rewrite the damned thing as a client application that communicates with the server, and it appears that we are going to be able to do so very, very scalably! It will be fun to get out of optimizing data structures and stored procedures for a while, and into a little oop and some interface work.

However, it won't be anywhere near as fun as working on game development full time would be. Since I was a mapper for years, and have been a talented graphics designer/photoshopper/artist for a while as well, I consider myself pretty versatile, but realistically, the only job in game design that I could see *really* coming to fruition would be working as a database monkey for a MMORPG, since the scalability issues (persistent connections, tiered development, db bottlenecks) are similar, and since I actually use a multiplayer gaming analogy for every freaking thing I design ("let's see -- if I was making a mod for Tribes 1, how would I do this?").

...

I wrote that about three years ago. Wow.

Things are a lot different now. I work from home, in Lisp and occasionally python (for deliverable client apps), picking up contract work mostly as a subcontractor bailing out other development houses. I got back from Paul Graham's project, "Startup School", out at Harvard. Given that I'm technically a Junior High-School dropout (even if I dropped out to go to college), it was an amazing experience for me.

Currently working on a Microsoft-transcending application in Lisp.
